WRFL: North Sunshine forfeits last Division 3 game of the season

A WRFL club has announced it’s forfeiting the remainder of the 2022 season after its previous game was ended early. Here’s what impact it will have.

A Western Region Football League club will not play out the remainder of the season.

North Sunshine has announced it has forfeited senior and reserve Division 3 matches against Laverton which had been scheduled for Saturday.

It’s a decision which also ends the Magpies’ season.

It follows the Roadrunners senior game against Tarneit last weekend being called off with several minutes remaining due to a melee.

“Following the events from this past weekend, it is the decision of the North Sunshine Football Club executive committee that both the men’s reserves and senior matches scheduled for this weekend will be forfeited essentially ending the 2022 campaign for our men,” the club said in a statement.

“This decision was not made lightly however the executive committee feel it is the appropriate action given what has occurred.

“The club will now undertake a full investigation into the weekend’s events.”

The decision means North Sunshine’s senior side will finish bottom of the ladder for the third time since the 2018 season.

They have won just a single game between 2019 and 2022.

However, the reserves side has shown improvement this season to finish with five wins in 15 matches.

Laverton had won the previous two meetings between the pair earlier this season by 24 and four points respectively.

“Unfortunately the senior men’s and reserves opponent has forfeited this Saturday’s game,” Laverton said in a social media post.

“The senior women’s game will still go ahead.

“(This is a) disappointing way to end our 2022 season, however we look forward to beginning the planning for our 2023 season.”

Laverton finishes the season in sixth position.
