WRFL: Division 2 club Glen Orden hoping to add to its depth

Opposition clubs can expect a much more aggressive Glen Orden on and off the field in the coming weeks as it pushes for a top four spot. Here’s why.

Glen Orden coach Nathan Moon isn’t afraid to reveal his side’s plans for the coming weeks.

With the Hawks locked in a tight battle for a top four position in Division 2 of the WRFL, Moon says he is looking to add more talent to his playing list.

Clubs have until June 30 — the clearance deadline — to sign players from other clubs.

After his arrival at the club, Moon was able to introduce a swagger of recruits as Glen Orden looked to improve on its 2021 season.

Those included the return of Josh MacDonald from Division 1 club Altona and young gun Julian Morsarevski who have all played in the Hawks’ opening five games.

Meanwhile, Chris Benson — who previously played for Tarneit — has featured in four matches and been named in the best three times.

But injuries have meant the Hawks often haven’t been able to get their best side out on the park at the moment.

“Out of our best 22 right now, we’ve probably got 11 or 12 guys out,” Moon said.

“It’s meant some guys have had an opportunity to play senior footy earlier in the season then they might have expected.”

The battle along the way saw Glen Orden sustain six injuries in the win over West Footscray two weeks ago, then, two players were injured in the warm-up before the loss to Albion on Saturday.

Five players played their first game of the season against Albion.

“We haven’t had much luck in terms of injuries — we’ve had everything from soft tissue to knees,” Moon said.

“We’ve been running around the 30-point mark for most of the year (Glen Orden’s highest points total was 36 in round one against Point Cook Centrals).

“So we’ve got some room to move. We’re looking to add to our depth and we’re open to chat to players.

“We don’t just want quality footballers but quality people who will fit in with our group.”

The Hawks currently sit 2-3 after the opening five rounds of the season with wins coming against the two Footscray sides, North and West.

While they narrowly fell short of a stirring comeback against Wyndhamvale by nine points in round 3.

Despite the injury troubles facing his side, Moon is continuing to look for positives.

And that includes the form of forward duo Aaron Law (16 goals) and Daniel Rosenzweig (14) who have booted 30 majors between them.

“They’ve been terrific and have given us some real weapons in front of goal,” Moon said.

“I actually wanted to play Aaron off halfback but injuries have meant his gone into a midfield-forward role and really thrived for us.

“Daniel plays with a lot of flair and does love to celebrate when he does kick a goal but it’s something which does get him and the rest of the boys going.”

On Saturday, the Hawks will test themselves against premiership contender Parkside.

“We know our best is good enough to challenge the top sides,” Moon said.

“We will get some personnel back in the next couple of weeks and hopefully that can help us string a few wins together.

“Because the division is so competitive if you win a few games in a row you can really set your season up.”
