WRFL: Caroline Springs remain unbeaten after 55-point win over Werribee Districts

Caroline Springs is continuing to create history in the WRFL with a returning junior continuing his impressive form inspired by a change in his playing style.

Young guns are fuelling Caroline Springs’ historic run.

The Lakers sit 6-0 at the top of the WRFL Division 1 ladder after a stunning start to the season to remain the only undefeated team in the competition.

On Saturday, the club took another step forward with a 15.19 (109) to 6.8 (44) win over Werribee Districts.

It was the first time Caroline Springs has beaten Districts and follows a historic first win over fellow premiership contender Altona earlier in the season.

“We were worried about Werribee Districts because it’s always a good game between the two sides no matter where we are on the ladder,” Caroline Springs coach Brodie Holland said.

“But we were able to set it up with the wind behind us in the last quarter (the Lakers kicked 7.8 to 0.1) and run away with it. I was pleased with how we left the foot on the pedal.

“Hoppers Crossing is the only side we haven’t beaten now but we will come to them in a few weeks for what should be another good game.”

While experienced recruits including Josh Cubillo and Ryan Allan have made opposition clubs take notice in the early parts of the season, younger players are taking enormous strides in their developments.

That includes Steve Kyriazis, a former junior who returned to the club at the start of the season.

He produced his best game of the year against Districts finishing with four goals — to take his tally to 16 — in a best on ground display.

Meanwhile, Lachlan Mellon, who only played under 18s in 2021, was named among the better players for the third time this season.

“We were able to get Steve into the game more this weekend,” Holland said.

“We had some good chats during the week about getting him further up the ground and it certainly worked because we were able to get his confidence rolling.

“He’s been in some good form and it was good to see him among the goals again.”

Mitch Bongiovanni also continued his impressive form as he was named in Caroline Springs’ best for the fourth consecutive game since coming back into the side.

Big man Liam Read, Cubillo and Keenan O’Shea were also impressive.

“Mitch has been great for us,” Holland said.

“He’s as hard as a cat’s head in the middle. But importantly he also shows great leadership for us when we need it most.”

For Werribee, Ben McMahon, Lachie Smith, Liam Robinson, Josh Mould, Trent Lee and Sean Gregory all battled hard.

Caroline Springs will look to make it seven straight wins against Sunshine next weekend while Werribee Districts aim to bounce back against Yarraville Seddon.
