Spotswood secures its best win of the season against Point Cook

Tom German’s first year in charge of Spotswood is gathering momentum with the WRFL club having plenty to be excited about for the rest of 2023 and moving forward. Here’s why.

Season 2023 has been nothing short of a rollercoaster for Spotswood.

There have been brilliant wins combined with horror losses.

Saturday’s 17.9 (111) to 11.14 (80) win over Point Cook was another of those moments where you could see the progression the WRFL club had made under Tom German.

It was a result which moved Spotty to 7-7, only percentage behind Caroline Springs in the race for a place in the top-four.

“I think the best part is we had eight guys under-21 out there,” German said.

“When you’ve got such a young group, you’re going to have differing results every week. To the playing group’s credit, they’ve been really receptive to what we’ve tried to implement this year.

“They’re really motivated to learn and get the best out of themselves. I’m really enjoying coaching them.”

Sam Cross and Sam Harvey were at the forefront of the result booting seven and four goals respectively in a display of what they can offer at their best.

After missing the start of the season with injuries, both are now finding their best form as the race for finals footy heats up.

“Cross is a new recruit and we knew one of these days wasn’t going to be too far away,” he said.

“He had just shown signs in recent games that it was all going to come together. Harvey has been around the club for a while and missed the opening weeks because of a hamstring.

“He just keeps bobbing up when the opportunity is there. Injuries have played a big role in our season.

“We’ve missed two of our prime movers, Ethan Bentley and Jack Charleston, at different times. But we’ve spoken about that creating opportunities for other guys which is the most important thing.”

Like the rest of Division 1, Spotswood will now enjoy a week off before preparing for a huge final month.

Its clash with Altona on August 12 will be the only time they face a top-four side to finish the season.

German has also re-signed for next year.
