Old Trinity has a fighting chance of escaping relegation after marching through Saturday’s downpour to win its Premier home game against St Bernards.
The Ts showed off their wet-weather skills, defeating the Snow Dogs by 12 points in the low scoring affair, 5.13 (43) to 4.7 (31).
The much-needed win marks a step away from relegation for Old Trinity, as it closes in on De La Salle, which remains just half a game ahead in eighth.
“I think we probably adjusted to the wet weather a little bit quicker than them and we haven’t had a lot of that in senior footy over the last 12 to 18 months,” Old Trinity coach Bernie Dinneen said.
In Round 10, the Ts showed similar vigour for the first three quarters during a rainy encounter with St Kevin’s.
“I think it speaks to the ability of our players to play to structures and be really disciplined,” he said.
“We’ve still had too many guys missing training sessions, which I’ve got no doubt has been a contributing factor to our number of injuries.”

Despite this year’s injury woes, the Ts have a fleet of youngsters that are showing promising signs.
This week, Oliver Stellar shut down the St Bernards’ forward line.
“He’s playing like a season defender,” Dinneen said.
In his second game of the year, 18-year-old Jack Lefroy also snagged two goals.
“There’s certainly a lot to like, we’ve played a bunch of first gamers this year, our kids have been super competitive,” Dinneen said.
Also in Premier this week, Old Carey went down to Collegians 11.13 (79) to 8.7 (55).
In Premier C, Marcellin was on Old Mentonians’ tail for most of the match before falling short 9.10 (64) to 6.12 (48).
In Division 2, Whitefriars thumped Yarra Old Grammarians by 65 points 14.16 (100) to 4.11 (35) in the neighbourhood derby while, Bulleen-Templestowe was overrun by MHSOB, 13.13 (91) to 7.13 (55).
And Manningham Cobras picked up its fifth consecutive win in Division 3 when it got the better of North Brunswick 10.12 (72) to 6.6 (42).
SHEAGLES HOLD ON AGAINST ST KEVIN’S
A wayward Marcellin edged to a one-point win over St Kevin’s in their VAFA Premier women’s clash at Bulleen Park on Saturday.
The Sheagles struggled to find their kicking boots but held on to salute 3.10 (28) to 4.3 (27).
Teah Stepan, Ella Madigan and Olivia Zuccala kicked Marcellin’s goals with Sophia Ikosidekas, Abbie McNamara and Natalie Gills the Sheagles’ best.
Old Trinity was at Melbourne University on Sunday while, in Premier C women’s, Yarra Old Grammarians was on its way to play Mazenod at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley.
The Division 2 women’s derby between Old Carey and Whitefriars at the Carey Sports Complex saw the home side edge the Friars 4.7 (31) to 4.5 (29).
On a day when weather conditions made scoring difficult, Kiera Lansdown kicked three of Old Carey’s four goals while Isabella Giannangelo booted all four of the Friars’ majors.
And, in Division 3, Bulleen Templestowe lost to Hampton Rovers, 2.8 (20) to 3.1 (19).
