Old Ivanhoe held on for a dramatic draw in its Premier C clash against Hampton Rovers at Boss James Reserve on Saturday, keeping its grip on fourth spot as a result.
But it was a hard grind against a desperate Hampton outfit with neither team able to get more than two goals ahead all day.
In a dramatic conclusion, a Hampton forward had a kick for goal after the siren but failed to make the distance and match ended at 10.11 (71) apiece.
Luke Velluto was dominant in the ruck throughout the day in another powerhouse display while captain Mal Mitris gave Old Ivanhoe a much-needed focal point in attack with his strong marking and strength in the contests.
Trent Marshall and Oscar McIntyre were outstanding in defence, holding Hampton’s forwards in check, while Seamus Gibbs and Jake Erman provided pace and attack around the ground.
Jake Welham, Richard Skok, Gibbs and Brendan Lee kicked two goals each in low scoring match.
This week, Old Ivanhoe will host Old Camberwell.

Remarkably, Old Ivanhoe’s Division 2 women also had a draw, 2.5 (17) apiece against a Whitefriars side they have never beaten.
The first half produced no goals, as neither team could open up its forward line, and it all boiled down to a dramatic last term.
Cecilia Baldassarre snapped a goal to level the scores and then Beth Hopper took an outstanding mark running back into the pack to save the match.
Meanwhile, Ivanhoe’s Division 1 women are back in finals contention after snapping a three-game losing streak with a 43-point win over Hawthorn at Rathmines Rd Reserve.
The Ivies, fourth, have a sizeable percentage buffer over fifth-placed Old Haileyburians.
With four rounds remaining, Ivies coach Leighton Pearce said his team needs to keep winning to ensure finals action.
“We had a focus to play four solid quarters after losing three games in a row,” he said.
“We’d played some good quarters in those losses but also some bad ones as well, in particular first quarters proving costly.”
The Ivies dominated the second half adding five goals, including three from Fede Frew, to win 8.9 (57) to 2.2 (14).
Ireland Hall, Rachel McLean, Frew, Kate Riddington and Sarah Galligan were among the Ivies’ best but Pearce was lavish in his praise.
“Every Ivies player played a very strong game. Many played their best game for the year,” he said.
And Ivanhoe’s Division 2 men trailed all day against Bulleen-Templestowe, losing by 44 points at Ted Ajani Reserve.
The contest seesawed between backlines in the final term before Bulleen-Templestowe held firm to win 12.16 (88) to 6.8 (44).
