Guy Martyn was not long out of VAFA Premier coaching ranks.

Let go by St Kevin’s last month, the former Sandringham VFL player has been appointed coach of Uni Blues, the team that defeated his Skob side in the 2019 grand final.

The Blues last week dumped former Sydney Swans midfielder Jarred Moore after one season.

He had been appointed for two years.

A disappointed Moore, who was a long-time assistant and development coach at AFL club North Melbourne, declined to comment on his departure.

The Blues were 6-5 and fifth on the ladder when Covid killed off the 2021 season.

Ahead of it club president Tim Rourke had told Leader: “The list we’re assembling, I’d suggest if don’t win (the premiership), it’s going to be a good side that does.

“We’ll have a better side than when we played (in 2019).”

Rourke told members this week that Martyn would be taking over from Moore, with Dan Currie to be his senior assistant.

Martyn’s axing at St Kevin’s to be replaced by Anthony Lynch lifted eyebrows considering he had coached St Kevin’s to the 2018 premiership, to the 2019 grand final and to a 9-2 standing this year.

Rourke said Martyn had a “fantastic track record in premier grade amateur football’’.

“He has a great passion and understanding of the game which he combines with his people and communication skills to deliver outstanding results, on and off the field.

“Guy teaches VCE psychology and physical education at St Bede’s.

“To quote Guy, ‘I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach at Uni Blues, which has a long and proud history in amateur football. With a strong playing list and some incredibly talented young footballers coming through, the future is very bright. I look forward to being part of that future and to get to know the playing group and supporters. It will be great to get back to football in 2022’.’’

Martyn also coached Hampton Rovers to two flags, in 2013 ((D Grade) and 2014 (C Grade).

Currie was the senior midfield coach at St Kevin’s from 2018 to 2021.

He had stints with the Sydney Swans, North Melbourne and Gold Coast, playing 10 AFL matches in a career cruelled by injury.
