A surging finish by Old Peninsula just failed to overtake a bigger and stronger Old Essendon in Saturday’s opening round of amateur Division One football at the Peninsula school.

Having conceded six of the first seven goals, Old Peninsula edged to within two points of the lead midway through the final quarter before Essendon steadied.

Back-to-back goals amidst the rain squalls from Ben Carr and Hugh Peacock raised hopes that Peninsula could win on Shaun Payze’s 400th game milestone day.

Injuries to Jeremy Gleeson, one of six first-gamers, and James Logan weakened the spine, Carr the only forward line winner with three goals.

Payze was lively early with a string of handballs but went goal-less on a day which suited defenders.

Alex Marshall at centre half-back was strong and purposeful, having benefited from his all-year swimming program. He even did some relief rucking assisting Mike McLellan, who was named the Pirates’ best player. Fellow on-baller Sam Harrison also showed fine leadership.

Coach Nick Claringbold told the players they had stood up and given everything for Payze in their spirited finish.

“The early lead we conceded was crucial,’’ he said.

Peninsula meets Therry Penola, again at home, this weekend.
