Josh Freezer has seen plenty of talented players pull on the VAFA Big V jumper.

Having been selected six times, the 2023 captain has been fortunate to play alongside some of the competition’s elite in his career.

But he rates the 2023 side pretty highly.

HOW TO WATCH THE VAFA BIG V GAME

“When you’ve played a few times, you get asked where the team rates compared to others, and it’s as strong as I can remember,” Freezer said.

“I think the good thing is that everyone who has been picked is in extremely good form at club level and hopefully we gel heading into the weekend.

“It’s nice to have rep footy back, the opportunity to play with some of these guys is something that keeps attracting me to play in these games.

“Our 2018 team was pretty good and so was 2017. Every year is strong when you get the best of the best coming together.

“Whenever there is the chance to play I want to put my hand up for selection.”

On most other weekends is focused on beating the VAFA’s best forwards.

On Saturday, he’ll be hoping they can get off the chain as VAFA Big V footy prepares to return for the first time since 2019.

Freezer said it’s hard to not be excited about the potential score his side could put on the board against the Perth Footy League at Elsternwick Park.

The forward line is headlined by James Tarrant Valentine, the second leading goalkicker in the competition.

He’ll be surrounded by Old Scotch teammate Aidan Franetic, Brodie Easton and Ryan Valentine with Old Xavierians’ Charlie Macisaac and Jack Hewitt making up the front six.

Valentine has played eight games for Casey in the VFL.

“It’s pretty special to think our forward line comes from two different clubs,” Freezer said.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how Valentine and Tarrant go about it because they’re always difficult to match up on when I play against them.”

Named at centre half back, Freezer will play a key role in defence alongside the likes of former Essendon halfback Marty Gleeson.

Brodie Steele, Campbell Moorfield, Charlie Cormack and Sam Sofronidis make up the rest of the back six.

“We’ve got three or four guys who all like to come off and intercept so we’ll be quite aggressive,” he said.

“We don’t know too much about the opposition but Ben Harding had quite a coveted career in Perth before coming to Old Melburnians so he’s been a great resource.

“He’s been quite forthright in saying that they’re going to be a quality footy side.

“We’re looking forward to the challenge and hopefully coming away with the win.”
