Competition will breed improvement at Lancefield in 2020.

The Tigers have secured former junior Tom Waters as senior coach for next season and are hoping an influx of talent can lift them up the RDFL ladder.

Waters is a two-time Bowen medallist and premiership player at Lancefield, and the club’s favourite son has a clear plan to turn it around.

“I’ve got a few plans in place but mainly just getting guys to training,” Waters said.

“In the last couple of years there’s been no push to get to training because you’d get a game no matter what.

“Bringing in a few guys in, if you want a spot in the senior side you’re going to have to work hard for it.

“It doesn’t matter about skill or talent, if you’re putting in the effort you’ll get results.”

Lancefield managed just two wins this season — both over fellow struggler Rockbank.

The club has seen some tough times since its 2009 premiership, forced to strip back due to financial issues.

However, Waters was confident those times were behind the club as it looks to attract home-grown talent back to Lancefield Park.

“We’re trying to get a few of the boys that have left in the last couple years to come back. A few are going to come and at least train with us over pre-season before they fully commit, “ he said.

“(The club) knew what they were getting into the last couple of years. They cut right back, they stopped all spending, local guys battled it out.

“Now that they’ve done the hard work, from here on in, it’s easier for them, it’s only up.

“It’s not going to happen overnight, but the long-term plan is obviously to become successful and win a premiership.

“All the guys that are there now and the guys we’re looking to recruit know they’ve got to come on board for a couple of years. It’s not going to be one-year, bang, we win it.”
