Sunbury star Alik Magin capped an outstanding season on Monday night with the Ballarat Football League best-and-fairest.

The former Gold Coast Sun claimed the Henderson Medal by a single vote in a thrilling count, ahead of Sebastopol’s Tony Lockyer.

Magin needed three votes in the final game of the season for victory and duly delivered to become Sunbury’s first medallist since Justin Lewis in 2003.

It was a big night for the star midfielder who was also awarded the Ballarat Courier Player of the Year and named ruck-rover in the Team of the Year.

“It was a bit of a shock,” Magin said.

“It came down to the last game, Jarrah (Maksymow) kicked six and Lachie Bramble was everywhere that day.

“I was a bit lucky, I needed three in the last game and ended up getting it.

“With blokes like Mitch Conn and Lachie Bramble in our side, they had pretty good years as well, so to poll as well as I did was a bit of a shock and I’m just happy it worked out for me.”

Magin was joined in the BFL Team of the Year by fellow Lions Conn (back pocket) and Bramble (wing).

Sunbury’s Tarryn Munroe (centre), Amanda Cusack (goal shooter), Elly Randall (interchange) and Ruth Smith (interchange) were named in the netball Team of the Year.

Sunbury also claimed the club championship.

The Lions finished the home-and-away season with as many wins as minor premier East Point but percentage relegated them to fourth.

Melton proved too strong in the elimination final but Magin was confident the club was in a strong position for future success with coach Travis Hodgson at the helm.

“It’s good to play under him, rather than against him, that’s for sure,” he said.

“He’s a very good coach, knows what he wants and he knows how to get it.

“Blokes listen to him and he’s had a lot of success, so I think we’ve got the right person and he’s going to take the club far.

East Point and Sebastopol will vie for the 2019 premiership on Saturday, while East Point and North Ballarat City will battle for the A-Grade netball crown.
