TODD Hughes is the gift that keeps on giving for Lalor.
The key forward willed the Bloods across the line against Diamond Creek on Sunday, guiding his side to its first win of the Northern Football League campaign.
Hughes booted six goals against the Creekers at Lalor Reserve, lifting the home side to a 12.7 (79) to 11.8 (74) victory to end their winless start to the Division 2 season.
One of the NFL’s most consistent forwards in recent years, Hughes has started 2016 in fine form booting 14 goals from three games.
But at three-quarter-time against the Creekers, his side still needed a lift to ensure it didn’t slip to 0-3.
Fuelled by Spencer Christopher, Hughes and the influential Anthony Velicki, Lalor clawed to a badly-needed win after booting three goals to one in the final quarter.
The contest was an arm-wrestle throughout, with no more than nine points between the teams at any break.
But the Bloods lifted when it mattered most to record a confidence-boosting triumph after loses to Thomastown and Hurstbridge to start the year.
The result left Lalor fifth on the table, outside the top four on percentage.
The Bloods travel to Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval to meet Fitzroy Stars this weekend, while Diamond Creek is at home against Thomastown.
