SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Holt’s milestone on hold

Oh, so close … Cranbourne full-forward Marc Holt was left stranded on 999 career goals after slotting seven against Tooradin-Dalmore at Casey Fields on Saturday.

As he neared the grand milestone a big crowd gathered behind him, but he missed some gettable shots in the final term. Holt now must wait a fortnight, with Cranbourne’s next game on July 28 against Officer. Cranbourne won the fixture 23.16 (154) to 10.6 (66).

NORTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Dogs out to make history

North Heidelberg is eyeing Northern Football League history as it looks to become the first club in the competition’s history to make Division 1 finals the season after claiming the Division 2 premiership. The Dogs disposed of Montmorency by 64 points on Saturday, 17.12 (114) to 7.8 (50), and are one of five sides with 7-5 records. Incredibly, Greensborough, Bundoora, North Heidelberg, Northcote Park and Heidelberg all share the same record after 12 games. West Preston-Lakeside, which has a percentage of 140, has dropped to seventh.

NORTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Banyule a serious contender

Another team making serious inroads after experiencing success last year in the NFL is Banyule. The Bears claimed the Division 3 flag in 2017 and are third in Division 2 after trouncing Diamond Creek by 79 points on Saturday. Former VFL big man Bailey Jordan bagged seven goals in a 20.13 (133) to 8.6 (54) victory over the Creekers, which dumped Diamond Creek from the top five. The Bears, Thomastown and the Creekers all have seven wins and are separated by percentage.

ESSENDON DISTRICT FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Doutta Stars break through

Essendon Doutta Stars have hope of avoiding relegation from EDFL Premier Division after clinching their first win of 2018 against West Coburg. The Stars triumphed 10.15 (75) to 6.6 (42) to leave the Burgers nervous about their position in the EDFL top flight. Essendon Doutta Stars face eighth-placed Avondale Heights next round and could haul themselves off the bottom of the ladder with consecutive wins.

WESTERN REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Wyndhamvale on the board

Wyndhamvale continued the drought-breaking theme of the weekend when it snapped its run of heavy losses with a rousing win over Albion in WRFL Division 1. The Falcons led at every change as they secured a 14.5 (89) to 9.15 (69) victory despite having five less scoring shots than their opponents. Nathan Bisset played his best game of the year, booting five goals to help Wyndhamvale home.

AFL YARRA RANGES: Seville clearly the side to beat

Six goals from Northern Blues coach and former Collingwood ruckman Josh Fraser fired Seddon to a commanding win in its top-of-the-table clash against Yarra Glen. Billed as a potential grand final preview, the Division 2 clash was a fizzer as Seville powered to a 21.19 (145) to 8.11 (59) victory. Seville is a game and percentage clear on top of the table and looks every bit this year’s flag favourite.

VICTORIAN AMATEUR FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION: Richmond Central prevails after siren

Richmond Central trailed by eight points with two minutes remaining in its VAFA Division 3 match against Albert Park on Saturday. But what do they say about Snakes? Back them into a corner and then they’ll strike. Joel Luis bagged his second major to cut the margin to two points and delivered the decisive blow after the siren, kicking his third to earn Richmond Central a 9.12 (66) to 9.10 (64) win to stay in the finals mix. See the finish in the video below.

SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Bryan bags 10 for Keysborough

Former Carlton and Collingwood big man Chris Bryan dominated up forward for Keysborough on Saturday, bagging 10 goals against East Brighton. Cory Hargreaves also contributed six goals and Matthew Carnelley finished with four majors as Keysborough scored a 23.7 (145) to 12.9 (81) triumph. The 64-point win strengthened Bryan’s side’s claims on a top-four spot, but they remained two games behind third-placed Highett.

EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Mulgrave joins the winners’ list

Mulgrave’s long wait is over. The Lions rallied from 27 points down at halftime to produce a stirring win over Mooroolbark in EFL Division 2, signing the song for the first time in 2018. Mulgrave kicked six goals to one after the main break, but Mooroolbark was left to rue its inaccuracy as it kicked 1.7 in the second half. Regardless, Mulgrave would have celebrated a long-awaited win after dropping 12 straight games to start the campaign.
