Haileybury has clinched the battle for Associated Public Schools (APS) supremacy, edging out Caulfield Grammar in an enthralling comeback.
Mitch Kirkwood-Scott and Liam George took their opportunities with both hands while Nick Watson further staked his claim as one of the best kids in the country.
The decider was determined by a number of players. Here are the 10 players that stood up on the day…
LIAM GEORGE (Haileybury): Kicked three of Haileybury’s eight majors including the sealer just moments before the final siren. His calm approach to his third seemingly meant for only one outcome.
NICK WATSON (Caulfield Grammar): The potential top-five pick did his draft chances no harm with three goals and a stack of the footy up until three-quarter time. He was held relatively quiet in the fourth but would’ve finished with in excess of 20 disposals.
MITCH KIRKWOOD-SCOTT (Haileybury): Kirkwood-Scott sensed and seized the moment late in the final term to hand Haileybury the lead. Playing on from an out on the full free kick, the right-footer used the wind meticulously from beyond 50. It’s a kick he, nor the Bloods, will forget anytime soon.
MURPHY REID (Caulfield Grammar): Was absent from Caulfields’ listed best but certainly showed his class and composure with ball in hand.
CHARLIE HARROP (Haileybury): Was Haileybury’s best player up until half time, regularly being at the forefront of the physical start to the match.
OLLIE MURPHY (Caulfield Grammar): Had a few important intercepts and was a reliable outlet for the Fields in crucial passages of play.
MITCH COOK (Haileybury): His panache was on show in the third term when he sped past a pack at pace to crumb the astray ball off hands without it hitting the ground. He kicked an immensely crucial goal.
HARVEY THOMAS (Caulfield Grammar): The GWS Giants Academy player had his moments in the match, kicking a nifty goal when the Fields had the run of play in the third.
TAJ HOTTON (Haileybury): Kicked an important goal and was involved in a lot of damaging plays up the ground.
RILEY LINKE (Caulfield Grammar): The Fields’ ruck competed hard all day and took some important contested marks around the ground in the last quarter.
