SFNL: Murrumbeena’s Blake Meadows has won two premierships in the space of eight days

Some footballers go their entire career without a flag, but not Murrumbeena’s Blake Meadows, who lifted his second premiership cup in eight days on Sunday. He talks about his “incredible” week.

Murrumbeena’s Blake Meadows says he needs a week or two for his September to properly sink in.

Meadows played in the Lions’ Southern league Division 2 premiership last Saturday in just his sixth senior game.

Just over a week later, the 19-year-old had a hand in Murrumbeena’s under-19s premiership win over Bentleigh.

Some footballers play their entire career for no premierships but Meadows has his hands around two cups in the space of eight days.

Meadows won the under-19 league goal kicking this season and kicked five on debut in the seniors.

He was out of the senior side at the back end of the year but got the nod when finals arrived.

“We went into the finals, had a week off and during that period and I played nineteens as well,” Meadows said.

“Two weeks before the senior final, I got told ‘you’re in, you’re playing’.”

Meadows kicked a goal and was among the Lions’ best during Sunday’s six-point win.

Meadows is yet to comprehend the enormity of his achievement but knows the tears will come when he does.

“It hasn’t really set in yet, I am still in awe of the senior one let alone this one,” he said on Sunday.

“It’s incredible and I feel like give me a week or two and I will just be crying – it’s awesome.

“The senior one is a lot more pressure, I feel like I get in there to play a role and here I play a role all the same but it’s so much more difficult to the seniors.

“Both of them are highly-contested, highly-pressurised and this one was so incredible because of how close it was but they’re both just awesome.”

Murrumbeena’s senior flag last Saturday capped three open age premierships.

The Lions made sure to celebrate their electric season but Meadows called it early to finish the job.

“We went back to the club and it was feral but it was lovely, everyone was so up and about,” he said.

“I took it easy on the Monday, I couldn’t afford to get to Tuesday training for the under-19s and be absolutely spent.

“It makes it all the better for tonight and tomorrow, it’s awesome.”

Murrumbeena has now won the premiership in each of its football sides while its women’s team got within a kick on grand final day.

Meadows says the four cups is a full-club effort but thinks it couldn’t have been done without senior coach Michael Kinsella.

“Everyone couldn’t have done this about Slicker (Kinsella), he is genuinely the conductor of Beena,” he said.

“He’s the heart and soul, a lot of people go into this, everyone played a part but especially Slicker.

“I just want to thank all my coaches, all the players, it’s just awesome.”
