Despite setting a return to play date, Oakleigh Districts are out of season 2020
A Southern league football club has joined Highett in pulling out of this year’s season, despite the SFNL setting a return to play date. And it appears several more clubs in the league are set to follow suit.

Oakleigh Districts Football Club has joined Highett in deciding to pull the pin on the Southern Football Netball League season despite the league announcing it hopes to return on July 25.
A message went out to players last night confirming the decision, which the club said followed feedback from players, committee members, members and stakeholders.
And, if the message to the club’s players is anything to go by, it’s likely they won’t be the only SFNL club to call it quits on a 2020 season that never took off.
“As you’re all aware about the season going ahead was always an uncertain topic,” the message said.
“Therefore … after many meetings and feedback from you as players, committee members, members and stakeholders the club has decided to cancel the season for 2020.”
It’s understood a letter will be sent to players explaining why the decision has been made and what they need to know going forward.
In the message, the club said it was asked to be added into a joint email by other clubs to put to the league about pulling the pin. But the club decided to forge its own path and let the league know of its decision alone.
The Leader reported on June 25 the SFNL said its position remained unchanged and aimed to start its season on Saturday, July 25.
The club’s withdrawal follows Highett Football Club, which pulled the pin on the 2020 season late last week.
The SFNL board met on June 23 and resolved to push on, despite the extension of Victoria’s state of emergency until July 19.
