Honouring its rich history and junior retention are the two drivers in Carrum Patterson Lakes’ bid for the Mornington Peninsula Football Netball League.

The Lions have put in an expression of interest for the MPFNL, joining Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Pakenham and South Mornington to have shown public interest.

Geographically appropriate clubs Skye and Chelsea Heights however have not lodged interest.

Club president Steve Benson further explained the reason behind the Lions’ application.

“We’re a 100-year-old club originally from the Mornington league,” he said.

“We won eight or so flags as well, we have a pretty rich history.

“Our juniors play through the Frankston district junior footy league, they want to stay in the comp.

“The main reason is the rich history and the relationship with our juniors.”

The juniors are flowing at Dyson Rd, with an impressive 18 sides taking to the field each week.

The Lions’ history however, is all the more impressive.

Carrum won the Mornington Peninsula Football League premiership 50 years ago in 1973 and followed it up with a successive premiership in 1974.

From midway through 1973 to early 1975, the Lions won 35 matches on the trot.

Benson noted how the Southern Football Netball League had been “amazing” to the football club and would be satisfied with returning to the competition if its bid is unsuccessful.
