Peninsula footy has never looked so good.
New lights have been switched on at Rye’s football ground, Rowley Reserve — and they’re so good that the Demons plan to host night games when footy returns next year.
“We will certainly look at having a couple of night games during the year, especially early on in April and May,’’ Rye vice-president and football manager Scott Beel said.
“We will go and approach some clubs…and talk to the league about it.’’
Rye’s ground, situated a few drop punts from the beautiful beach sand, has always been regarded as one of the best on the peninsula.
Eye-popping photos taken by Jonathan Dade and his drone highlight what a spectacular venue the Demons have.
Beel said twilight games could be played over summer, while regular season games could also kick off in the twilight zone.
“We’ve been speaking about it and we’d probably go with 12 o’clock (for the Under 19s), 2pm (for the reserves) and four o’clock for the seniors because then you can get in after a game at 6pm and still have a function and not be too late,’’ he said.
“There are a few options.’’
Meanwhile, Beel said Rye’s recruits had committed to next season.
The Demons’ key pick ups were Mt Eliza trio Jordan Capkin, Brodie Shaw and Ben Farish, Peninsula Old Boys pair Mitch Glenn and Louis Barbour and Dillon Devers from Upwey Tecoma.
Adam Kirkwood will continue as coach as the Demons look to play finals for the first time since 2014.
Rye added former Essendon player Barry Besanko and ex-Wantirna South assistant Ian Burkitt as assistant coaches, joining Chad Ambrose.
Rye beat Edi-Asp by a point in a practice game before the season was cancelled.
