Reservoir sacks coach David Nelson just 11 games into his tenure

While Reservoir’s senior side is yet to taste victory in 2019, coach David Nelson had been a key part of the NFL club’s rebuild after it went into recess three years ago. Now he’s gone.

Reservoir has sacked coach David Nelson just 11 games into his tenure.

The Mustangs are winless in NFL Division 3 as the battling club continues its rebuilding mission just three years after being forced into recess.

Nelson, who copped the axe on Monday, said he believed the lack of on-field success had little to do with the decision, pointing to issues off the field.

“I don’t think it was the performance, it was nothing to do with that. It was more around the governance side of things,” Nelson said.

“They gave me my marching orders because of no trust.

“We wanted a better culture at the top of the club so that it filters down through the club.”

An assistant under Aaron Collins for two years, Nelson got the top job after Collins stepped down last year.

Also serving as the reserves coach, Nelson guided Reservoir’s seconds to a Division 3 finals appearance in 2018.

Notice of a special general meeting was posted on the club’s Facebook page on June 20 to “vacate and re-appoint executive committee positions for the remainder of the 2019 season.”

However, the meeting was later cancelled and the existing board re-elected.

WRFL: COACH BASHED IN UGLY POST-MATCH CLASH

Reservoir president Steve Bower has not responded to Leader’s request from comment.

Disappointed to be leaving the club he had hoped to resurrect, Nelson said he’d already been contacted by rival clubs.

“I’ve had a few text messages from coaches from other clubs,” he said.

“I’ll still look to keep involved in coaching but at the moment my daughter’s in the under-14s and needs some attention.”

The Mustangs claimed the Division 3 premiership in 2015 but a player exodus forced the club to withdraw from Division 2 and go into recess in 2016.

Reservoir returned the following year, winning one game, but went winless in 2018 and has failed to chalk up a victory so far this season.
