The Rye football community is rallying around a father-of-three and his family after he was rushed to hospital with severe heart failure.
Tane Rongonui remains in hospital undergoing testing and being closely monitored by specialists.
He is suffering with advanced heart failure with his function at just seven per cent.
A GoFundMe which has now raised over $40,000 for the family said Mr Rongonui’s heart failure was so severe “his cardiologist said it was the worst case he had seen in over 30 years”.
“At just 40, with three beautiful kids – Isabelle, Harrison and Tommy Tornado, all still in primary school, this came as a terrifying shock,” the page says.
“One day, Tane was doing ballet pick up and camping with the boys the next, he was in a cardiac ward fighting to survive.
“Doctors acted fast, starting him on intensive medications and closely monitoring his responsiveness.”
Described as an “all-round incredible human” Mr Rongonui often volunteers with his son’s junior football team at Rye.
“One of our U9 dads, Tane Rongonui, a loyal volunteer who runs water for the team every week is currently in hospital battling severe heart failure. At just 40 years old, with three young kids, Tane faces a long and uncertain road ahead,” the club said.
“The Rongonui family are the first to help others, now it’s our turn to support them.”
Doctors are hoping to install an ICD (implantable cardiac defibrillator) to help prevent sudden cardiac arrest.
