Northern League: Danny Nolan stands down as Heidelberg coach

Danny Nolan departs Heidelberg as an “all-time great” as he prepares for his next chapter, reflecting on the last three years in charge of the Tigers.

A giant piece of the puzzle is now missing at the Heidelberg Football Netball Club.

Senior coach Danny Nolan is stepping away from his role and he and his family prepare to move to the Gold Coast for a new opportunity.

He leaves on top of the Northern Football League mountain after the Tigers broke through for their first Division 1 premiership since 2016 in September.

It was Nolan’s sixth premiership in the yellow and black.

Five came as a player and this year was his first in a role he never expected to find himself in.

The premiership trophy only added to one of the great Heidelberg resumes — four senior best-and-fairests, a team of the decade member and a life member.

Heidelberg describe him as an “all-time great” — and rightfully so.

“I’ve probably overachieved,” he said reflecting on his time at the helm of the Northern league powerhouse.

“This time three years ago I wasn’t even thinking about coaching. I was just wanted to help out and give back to a club that has given me so much over the last 18 or 19 years.

“To be able to lead this group through one of it’s most challenging periods has been tough but it’s mostly been positive.

“Talking to other coaches, you get a feel for how difficult it has been — to go through all the pre-seasons, the recruiting meetings for just over one-and-a-half seasons in three years. That’s what made success so much sweeter.

“I’m really proud to say we had a fantastic record across our seniors, reserves and under 19s. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t come away with the ultimate prize in those other two grades.

“I would say this year’s premiership was one of the sweetest things to have happened in the club’s 147-year history.”

Nolan knows a little thing or two about sustained success at the Tigers too having played a key role during the club’s run of four straight premierships between 2006 and 2009.

And he believes the current playing group is primed to continue challenging at the top of the competition.

“The environment is as good as I have seen it,” he said.

“I’ve played in some very good sides and this group is determined to keep getting better. Their attitude to everything, from training to the way they treat people around the club, is second to none.

“I’m walking out knowing the club is in a good place. It was really important for me to maintain those relationships and friendships I’ve built over the years.

“Not everyone might have those when they leave, but I’m fortunate to still have those. I’m looking forward to watching from afar and seeing how the players keep developing, they’re still young.

“Hopefully they can have as much success as possible.”

Nolan said he could single out countless people for their support over the years as a player and coach.

From presidents, committees and volunteers “the people who make clubs tick”.

“I’m thankful for every piece of support I’ve received,” he said.

“The club is big, there’s far too many to name.”

Heidelberg is now advertising for Nolan’s replacement with applications set to close on October 14.
