WRFL: Albanvale appoints Nick Smith as new coach

Albanvale has appointed a “refreshed” Nick Smith as its new senior coach and he’s excited by what the future could hold for the club.

New Albanvale coach Nick Smith believes the club is perfectly set up to reach the promise land.

Smith was unveiled as the club’s new senior mentor on Sunday after a year away from the game.

He had previously coached Werribee Centrals in the Geelong and District Football League guiding them to a preliminary final in 2019.

And he believes Western Region Football League Division 3 success might not be too far away for the Cobras.

That’s despite the 2022 season ending in disappointment with a straight sets finals exit.

“I am so excited to be the new Albanvale Football Club senior coach,” Smith said in a statement released by the club.

“With a mini break in 2022 from coaching, I feel refreshed and ready to take this playing group to the highest level.

“I heard great things about the club and seeing the recent success they had in 2022 across their football and netball teams with 4 premierships, I am hoping I can facilitate even further success – especially for the senior playing group.

“The club seems very tight knit and family oriented which I love and I know Borgy (club president Adam Borg) and the committee have big plans for the future that I want to be a part of leading.

“I know we have a real climb ahead of us if we want to get to the heights we all desire — so I'm excited to start laying the foundations and doing the work we need to do to start taking those first steps towards the summit.”

Smith, who was Mount Waverley’s premiership coach in 2016, will replace Andrew Bryson and Dean Formosa.

Bryson had been in charge of the Cobras for four year.

“Andrew made an immediate impact on his return driving to continue the Albanvale culture within the playing group but also adding professionalism within the club,” Albanvale said.

“As a club we couldn’t thank Andrew enough for his involvement of rejuvenating our group for the last four (sic) seasons and with him all the very best spending more time with his family.

“Your passion for the club and its members will always be part of the new chapter.”

Meanwhile, Formosa stepped into the role of playing coach for the 2022 season.

He has put his coaching ambitions on hold to spend more time with his young family.
