Hurstbridge’s proposed payments to under-19 players would be included in this year’s overall salary cap, the Northern Football League has confirmed.

The Bridges are offering incentive to under-19 players in an effort to field a team for the first time since 2016 in the age group.

The club has waived registration fees and offered those who play 1-9 games $100 for the season and players who feature in 10 games or more $200.

The Northern Football League has confirmed any payments to senior, reserves or under-19 players are factored into the salary cap, which is $215,000 for Division 1 clubs in 2019.

Bridges under-19 coach Kevin Lewis said the club was “pulling out all the stops” to return to the under-19 ranks.

“It is hard to attract and motivate that sort of age group that are transitioning from juniors into men,” Lewis said.

“We just thought we had to do something different.”

The payments will not create a significant hole in Hurstbridge’s cap.

Should 20 players feature in 10 games or more, the payments would equate to $4000.

“We are trying to pull out all stops to make sure we can provide a game of football and hopefully some of these young blokes would turn into senior footballers,” Lewis said.

Hurstbridge has had about 15 players attend pre-season training and needs a further 10 to guarantee it enters a team.

The club’s under-19 trains on Monday and Thursdays from 6pm.
