It’s a new era for football and netball on the Mornington Peninsula, with a name change and the formation of a board of management.
The league will now be called the Mornington Peninsula Football Netball League — it was the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League since 1986 — after club presidents voted for the change at Wednesday night’s annual general meeting.
Nepean has been dropped from the name, with the MPFNL name now including the netball component of the competition which has been a vital addition of all 22 member clubs for the past decade.
“A motion was raised and it was carried unanimously,” AFL South East’s Haydn O’Connor said.
“The presidents wanted to incorporate netball into the competition.
“So from now the league name is the MPFNL which is going to take a little bit of getting used to.”
While the Nepean name has been removed from the league name, the premiership flags that are proudly hung in many clubs are a tangible reminder of the origins of the region.
The logo will remain the same, with the letters changing to reflect the new abbreviation of the MPFNL.
In addition, an MPFNL board will be formed, made up of six members.
Nominations for the MPFNL board opened on Thursday and remain open for two weeks.
“AFL South East will still administer the competition as per the service agreement we’ve got but there will be six people who will be basically the strategic vision of the competition,” O’Connor said.
The MPFNL board will be headed up by a president.
The criteria to join the board is that the person must be nominated by a member club.
“In two weeks time we will know how many nominations and then there will be an election process for that,” O’Connor said.
“The initial term for the six board members is 12 months.”
O’Connor said the 2023 MPFNL season, with a raft of big name recruits, shapes as the strongest ever.
“I’m blown away by some of the recruits that have come in,” he said.
“We had a look and there are 25 players that have been on an AFL list that are signed to play in the competition this year.”
