Things can change quickly in local football.
A month ago Danny Ades had stepped down as coach of Dingley and hung up his boots, intent on stepping away from footy completely.
But his phone started ringing with offers from local clubs.
One, in particular, had him “intrigued’’.
Rosebud called Ades and insisted they meet.
Late last week, the deal was done; Ades was installed as coach of the Buds in Division 1 of the Mornington Peninsula league.
He also hasn’t ruled out playing next season.
Ades said a two-and-a-half hour meeting with Rosebud’s committee convinced him to take the job.
“It just felt so comfortable,” he said.
“What Rosebud provided me in the meeting was this really detailed support system that was really impressive and I just got on with the committee really well.
“I went home and thought about it.
“They rang me the next morning and I accepted.”
Ades coached Dingley for the past three seasons, interrupted by Covid, and took the Dingoes to the SFNL Division 1 elimination final this year.
He says he’s excited by the opportunity to go to Rosebud with a “blank canvas’’ and build on the club’s proud history
“What I loved, and why I decided to go for the job, was because everywhere you ask they scream culture,” Ades said.
“It has a deep history and I get to build on that…build on a young playing group. There’s already a strong culture system in place, it’s pretty exciting.”
Rosebud has appointed Ades for two seasons.
“I’ve come from a job where I was really topping up at the end of a dynasty,” Ades said of his time at Dingley.
“But going into somewhere with a blank canvas, it’s intriguing and seeing the age demographic it’s something to build on, that’s one of the more exciting parts of the job.”
Rosebud president Brett McRae said Ades’ appointment followed a long process to find a new coach to replace Nick Jewell.
He said Ades was the right man to lead the Buds into the future.
“To be honest, it was the way he presented to us,” McRae said.
“The questions he asked, you could just tell he was a coach.
“And that’s what we really need with our young group, someone who has experienced coaching.
“He was super impressive.”
Rosebud finished in ninth spot, with a 2-16 record, in MPNFL Division 1 in 2022.
