Life just got a little bit tougher for MPNFL Division 2 defenders with a star forward joining Somerville.
Southern league team of the year member and Oakleigh District jet Jake Mullen has re-united with his great mate Paul Fermanis at the Eagles.
The 26-year-old crowd pleaser will add a new dimension to the Somerville forward line alongside excitement machine Ryan Gillis, who kicked 59 goals last season.
“He’s a legit SFNL star,’’ Somerville coach Brad Canavan said of Mullen.
“We’re rapt. We will have Jake and G-Man inside fifty and then we will sort the rest of the forward line out around that.’’
Mullen played in Dingley’s premiership in 2015 under Shane Morwood and has been a regular SFNL team of the year player with Oakleigh District.
He kicked 34 goals last season, and 39 the year before.
“He’s A Grade,’’ Canavan said.
“He’s a big brute, he’s strong and like a lot of people have described him, they say, ‘you’ve just picked yourself up another Paul Fermanis but he’s 26 years of age’.’’
Canavan says the Eagles are “bursting” to win a flag after a three-decade dry spell.
Somerville’s last flag was in 1986.
The Eagles have recruited well, with Mullen joining Frankston Dolphins midfielder and former Stingrays captain Lachlan Williams, Travis Bravo (back from Pearcedale) and Frankston Bombers playmaker Brett Sutton as arrivals at Jones Rd.
