A Rye footy favourite is heading back to Rowley Reserve, five years after he left.
Former captain and champion ruckman Rhett Sutton has put in a clearance to the Demons, hoping to add to his 205-game tally.
He was to play with Stanhope in the Kyabram league this year but the coronavirus crisis led to a change of plans.
And the chance to return to Rye presented itself.
“He just wants to have a run,” Rye official Scott Beel said.
“He’s got kids now, they’re about five years of age, and he wouldn’t mind them seeing him play footy.
“He might only play five or six games, if we get a season going.”
Beel said Sutton was “really fit at moment”, keen to pull on the blue and red jumper again and help Demons number one ruckman Ryan Williams.
“It’s great for us, to have someone come back to the club who is going to do it for the right reasons,’’ Beel said.
Sutton was one of the premier ruckman in the MPNFL although Beel said he’d probably have a different role in 2020.
“He’s not coming back to play ruck or anything, he will probably play forward or run around on the wing,” Beel said.
“He will do a bit of ruck work around the ground but I don’t think he’s too keen to play the number one ruckman, he’s there to help Ryan Williams.”
