MPFNL: Undefeated Dromana adds Southern league star

The 10-0 Tigers have signed an “A Grade” midfielder who has won three league best and fairests. He’ll slot in alongside Jake Aarts.

Dromana’s latest recruit will add a much-needed commodity to the undefeated Tigers, according to coach Matt Price.

St Kilda City’s highly-regarded midfielder Madison Andrews has crossed to the MPFNL Division 1 ladder leaders to play alongside his brother, full-forward Jordan Andrews.

“He’s going to bring a heap of leadership and experience and we still don’t have a lot of that,” Price said.

“And obviously his skill set…from what I’ve heard he’s a midfielder who accumulates plenty of the footy so he’ll work into our system alright.”

As long as the clearance papers go through, Andrews will line-up for Dromana on Saturday when the Tigers host last season’s runners-up Bonbeach.

He will slot into a midfield featuring former Richmond player Jake Aarts.

A bull of a midfielder, Andrews has been one of the most decorated and respected players in the south-east, making his name mainly at Berwick.

He won three league best and fairests, was a regular team-of-the-year selection and played in premierships with Berwick.

Andrews was with Dandenong Stingrays and then VFL club Sandringham before dropping back to local football.

“He’s one of a kind, Mads, an absolute professional in the way in which he goes about preparing himself week in week out, a perfectionist when it comes to the way in which he carries himself at the club in training,” Berwick coach Stu Kemperman said after the club’s 2017 premiership.

“He’ll go down as one of the greats of the club.”

Price said Dromana was excited to secure Andrews for “a couple of years and beyond’’.

“He saw the opportunity to play with his brother for this year and next year and beyond and he jumped at it,” Price said.

“It wasn’t just a case of come in for this year. I spoke to him and he was keen to get on board for a couple of years, so that was why we went down that path…it’s not just for a couple of games it’s for next year as well so we’re excited about that.”

There was talk of former Melbourne onballer James Magner accompanying Andrews to Dromana but Price quashed those rumours.
