Make a mistake and Dromana will “hurt you so badly”.
So says Red Hill coach Jamie Mollo, who declared the 10-0 Tigers clearly the team to beat for this season’s MPFNL Division 1 premiership.
“They’re the standard, by far,” Mollo said after his Hillmen lost to Dromana by 50 points on Sunday.
“They’re so evenly balanced across all lines. And if one part of your game’s on but another is off they hurt you with the part that’s off.
“They thrive in chaos and turnover and if you give them the ball back they just hurt you so badly.”
Even without star recruit Jake Aarts, who sat out, Dromana powered to its 10th consecutive victory this season, 18.15 (123) to 11.7 (73).
Terry Wheeler, Billy Quigley and Reece Wilde ran all day, while Riley Davis kicked four goals and Ethan Johnstone three.
Mollo could only marvel at Dromana’s ability to click into another gear when challenged.
“Our boys hung in there and our first half was good,” Mollo said.
“You get three or four points up on them and they put the foot down and they’re 20 points up.
“Credit to them. Look, I don’t know how they do it but they just don’t get injured. They’re a good side.”
Billy Geurts had a great battle with Red Hill’s Harry Wynn-Pope in the ruck, with Mollo praising “big Popey” for his efforts.
Sam Fowler and Jai Taylor were also named in Dromana’s best.
Red Hill’s best were captain Jonah Siversen, who fought hard all day, and Dan Frampton down back.
Aarts compliments Dromana’s midfield but even without him the Tigers are still a quality combination.
Mollo said Dromana’s running ability was its strength.
“They just keep running,” he said.
“Their ability to get across the ground for four quarters is a credit to the work they do in the off season. They just kept running all day.”
Mollo said Red Hill’s young players would learn from playing against quality opponents.
“We stood up when we needed to but just didn’t stand up for long enough,” he said.
“We’ve got the bye this week. We will lick our wounds, get ourselves ready and take on Rosebud.”
Dromana’s next game is against last season’s runners-up Bonbeach, at Pier St, on June 24.
