A Mornington Peninsula league match was abandoned after a player collided with a fence after being tackled on Saturday.

The incident occurred in the final minute of the reserves match between Devon Meadows and Hastings, with Devon Meadows captain Daniel Tocknell sustaining head injuries.

He was attended to on the oval for almost an hour before being taken by ambulance to Frankston hospital.

The long delay caused the senior match to be abandoned without it starting.

Devon Meadows president Chris Langley said Tocknell was talking to club medical staff before being transported to hospital.

“He was talking,’’ he said.,

“He got tackled into the fence and then he sort of face planted the concrete but not bad…he’s got concussion and a big lump on his head.”

The senior match was abandoned by the field umpires under rule 24.3 which states, “play may continue until no more than thirty minutes beyond the estimated finishing time if in the opinion of the umpire that adequate light permits’’.

AFL South East will review the abandonment upon receiving communication from the umpires on Monday.
