A Mornington Peninsula league Division 1 game was called off in the final quarter on Saturday after a young Mt Eliza player suffered a head injury.

Will Lambert, 19, was knocked out in an accidental head collision against Rosebud with about six minutes to go.

He was attended to by club trainers and an ambulance was called.

Rosebud was leading by 51 points at the time and was awarded the win, 14.7 (91) to 5.10 (40).

“It was an in-game head clash,” Mt Eliza coach Stephen Brattle said.

“He was out for a little bit and safety first we called for ambulance.

“He is OK and resting at home.”

Rosebud coach Danny Ades said it was great news that Lambert had escaped serious injury.

“Footy quickly becomes secondary when such incidents occur,” he said.

“Both clubs and particularly the umpires were excellent in how this situation was handled.”

Port Melbourne-listed Lambert is in his first season of senior football, and showed his talent in Round 9 when he kicked five goals against the Frankston Bombers.

He is from Mt Eliza footy royalty; his grandfather Greg Lambert coached the Redlegs’ 1983 premiership.

Mt Eliza slipped to fourth spot after the defeat, while Rosebud’s fourth win of the season was set up by Collingwood VFL captain Campbell Hustwaite, who kicked three goals, and Carlton VFL forward Blake Kuipers, who slotted five goals.

Zac Maynard, Stephen Cumming, Robert Bos and Fletcher Hustwaite were also in the Buds’ best.

“Yeah, really pleasing,” Ades said of the victory.

“The first four quarter effort we’ve put in for the season and against a team that really took us apart the first time.

“All 22 did their job…but probably what stood out was the individual games of our teenagers, not just this week but the last month I’d say; Isaac Freene, Matt Friendly and Jamie Duck.”

Rosebud plays bottom side Bonbeach next week, while Mt Eliza faces ladder leaders Dromana.
