Recently retired Melbourne defender Michael Hibberd is hoping to go from the last line to the front line as he pursues a career as a firefighter post football.
Hibberd, who played 197 matches across Essendon and Melbourne, retired at the end of the 2023 AFL season.
The 2021 premiership player just passed the Fire Rescue Victoria physical aptitude test and awaits further results on his progression in coming weeks.
Hibberd has been linked with a plethora of local football clubs across Melbourne since retiring.
He has told each of the clubs he has spoken to that his decision will come after the result of the firefighting process.
If successful, the 33-year-old is likely to be working shift work, where his availability at local level will be staggered.
Hibberd said while he enjoyed his time off, he is getting back into the gym ahead of his new career opportunity and the local season.
“I’m working back into gym work and running again now after a solid break of not doing much, the body feels good and I’m keen to start having a kick soon, wherever that is,” Hibberd said.
