Now we’ve broken down the best across each competition.
Here are all the emerging stars of 2023.
EASTERN
Sahaf Ali, East Ringwood
Damaging and exciting as a midfielder and forward, Ali has stood up in some big moments for the ‘Roos this season – including their last-gasp win over Noble Park with two final-quarter goals dragging his side over the line. Has played 16 matches this year, kicking 14 goals.
Harry Banfield, Vermont
The son of four-time Eagles premiership coach David is etching his own story at Terrara Rd, with the former Eastern Ranges halfback now a regular starter for the top-division powerhouse after his senior debut last year. Played all bar one home-and-away game for the ladder-topping Eagles this year.
Cayden Black, South Belgrave
Still only just 19, the son of former AFL Saint and Docker Heath has had no worries adapting to the rigours of senior footy across the past three seasons, with the midfielder winning a premiership with South Belgrave in Division 2 last year. He was a key part of the Saints’ flag push in Division 1 this year, which fell short to Mitcham.
Max Brasher, Boronia
The 21-year-old midfielder slotted in seamlessly at the Hawks this season, capping it off with a premiership medal in Division 2 after crossing from Upper Gully. It’s no surprise after he finished top-four in the Kings’ best-and-fairest in just his first full year of senior footy.
Sam Carney, Mitcham
Still only 21 years of age, the inside-midfielder has relished a move from Noble Park this season, starring as one of the Tigers’ leading tacklers on the way to the Division 1 premiership.
Dan Chamberlin, Montrose
Was playing under-17 football as recently as 2021 – but has cemented himself in the senior program under coach Gary Ayres across the past two seasons, playing a further 19 matches for 28 goals to help the club to a second-consecutive finals campaign.
Jesse Cherry, Mitcham
One of the leading clearance-winners and inside-50 entry players in Eastern’s Division 1 competition, the midfielder was a key to the Tigers’ finals push this season. Best afield in Mitcham’s Division 1 grand final win.
Josh Clarke, Rowville
The ex-Eastern Ranges captain earnt his keep at the Hawks this season, helping the club to second spot on the ladder while plying his trade as a midfielder/forward. Coach Ben Wise has previously noted his elite speed and decision-making by foot. The left-footer had a brief stint with Frankston VFL before joining the Hawks full-time ahead of last season.
Brock Coleclough, Rowville
The in-and-under midfielder is as tough as they come and very rarely loses a one-on-one contest. Now in his third year of senior footy, he followed 15 senior matches last year with all 18 home-and-away matches in 2023, helping the Hawks to second spot on the ladder.
Angus Cramer, Waverley Blues
The dynamic midfielder/half-forward has had a breakout year for the Blues in a higher division after a handful of matches in Division 3 last year – in fact, he played every game in Division 2 this season. Holds his ground exceptionally well according to coach Tom Langford, is clean with the ball on both sides of the body, and boasts pace and a ferocious attack on the ball.
Tyrone Galbraith, Montrose
Damaging in attack this season with 25 goals from 18 matches – including a bag of five against fellow finalist Beaconsfield. In fact, he hit the scoreboard in all bar four outings this year.
Tom Gasparroni, Ferntree Gully
The 21-year-old backed up from 13 senior matches in ‘22 with a further 16 this year – his side finishing second, contesting the Division 3 grand final. Has made a name in a high half-forward role exhibiting a great leap, mark and exceptional pace according to coach Brent Kiker.
Jacob Goicoa, Noble Park
Toasted a flag with the Bulls in his first season of senior footy last year, following up this year with nine top-flight appearances. The 188cm wingman boasts athleticism, a strong overhead mark and courage according to coach Steve Hughes.
Tom Goldsmith, Donvale
Won a comp best-and-fairest last year in the under-19s – and the wing/half-forward continued to light it up in the senior ranks this season for minor premier Donvale across 19 games, winning a flag. Can run all day.
Lachie Harry, Blackburn
Has been in the senior system for three seasons now, where he’s made his name as an ultra-reliable ruckman in Eastern’s Premier Division – no mean feat considering the wealth of more experienced opponents he’s often tasked with.
Taj Heap, Montrose
The midfielder played every game for the Dees this year – 21, including three finals – kicking 10 goals and finishing among the best on six occasions.
Ben Horsnaill, Blackburn
The silky-skilled half-forward/midfielder cemented himself in the senior line-up this season with 18 matches and 13 goals, after getting a taste at top-division level with eight games in 2022.
Harry Isaacs, Heathmont
The defender has become a proven matchwinner for the Jets across the past two seasons. This year he’s turned out for 21 matches – 12 of those in the best. Not only is he strong in one-on-one contests, but he also creates attacking opportunities with his rebound work.
Darcy Jones-Hughes, Doncaster East
The 20-year-old midfielder doesn’t look out of place among a team stacked with ex-AFL and VFL talent. Played every home-and-away match in Eastern’s top division for 10 mentions in the best, while also cracking a VFL game for GWS earlier this year.
Nick Kann, Surrey Park
Coach James Kenworthy could only marvel at the emerging forward as he filled his boots with 15 goals in a game this season, on his way to a leading 56 in the Division 4 from 16 games. He made his senior debut in 2022.
Jett Latchford, Ringwood
The 21-year-old has made the ruck position his own at the Redbacks, after making his senior debut in Round 1 of last season. He played a further 13 games this year for a whopping 11 mentions in the best – including a best-afield showing against Heathmont.
Guy Laughlin, Mitcham
Just turned 23 and has had a major impact for the Tigers up forward and through the midfield this season, helping the club to the Division 1 finals. Kicked 32 goals from 22 games, playing a key role in the club’s grand final victory.
Darcy Laurie, Montrose
One of many young guns lighting it up under coach Gary Ayres, the wingman/midfielder took in all 21 games this season (including three finals), kicking 13 goals.
Matt Low, Silvan
The forward kicked 39 goals to help the Cats to the Division 4 premiership in 2022 – but this season he kicked a leading 58 for his club in its Division 3 finals push.
Declan McBean, Scoresby
Former Sandringham Dragon joined the Magpies from Noble Park this season and didn’t miss a beat, carving out 15 matches and kicking 28 goals, including two in the club’s elimination final win over Chirnside Park. The 22-year-old has been a nice pick-up for the Maggies.
Josh Meerkotter, Ringwood
The high-flyer held down the centre half-forward role for the Redbacks to great success in 2022 – playing 16 games that season until a knee injury late in the piece ended his campaign. But he returned this year without any worries, playing another 16 for seven mentions in the best.
Luke Morando, Whitehorse Pioneers
Coach Andrew Haining says the half-back flanker and midfielder is a “jet” – tough and quick, his campaign was cut short this season, but he featured in the Pioneers’ best in four of his nine showings in Division 3.
Nathan Noblett, Noble Park
The 21-year-old debuted for the Bulls this season following two matches for VFL outfit Port Melbourne in 2022. The medium-sized forward has slotted in seamlessly at Noble, highlighted by a best-on-ground, five-goal display against Berwick in Round 2 on the way to playing all 18 home-and-away matches.
Will Oglethorpe, Blackburn
Won the league’s under-19 best-and-fairest in the top division last season before a handful of senior appearances this year, impressing coach Brendan Allen.
Christian Poe, The Basin
The small forward played all 18 matches for the Bears in Division 2 this season and was among the best in 12 of those. Formerly listed with the Eastern Ranges.
Harry Prout, Whitehorse Pioneers
The half-back flanker/midfielder is highly rated by coach Andrew Haining, carving it up for the Pioneers in all 18 matches this season – six of those in the best.
Lachlan Rathjen, Vermont
Straight from Gippsland Power, the 19-year-old didn’t muck around earning his spot in top-division powerhouse Vermont’s side, playing often as a forward. But it’s not all about the goals he kicks, according to the coach: “He’s willing to sacrifice his game for the team,” coach Adam Parker said of Rathjen earlier this season.
James Ross, Vermont
The former Eastern Ranges captain, now 21, has become a crucial cog to the Vermont defence since his senior debut two years ago. The brother of champion ruckman Robbie Ross was considered unlucky not to be invited to the draft combine in 2019.
Tom Sheridan, South Croydon
What a rise from the 21-year-old Bulldog, finding his way onto Casey’s VFL list earlier this year after lighting it up in Eastern’s top division across the past two seasons – which included 45 goals in 2022.
Jayden Weichard, Kilsyth
The midfielder crossed to the Division 4 club from Mooroolbark at the end of last season and has consistently lit it up for the Cougars, who finished on top of the ladder and contested the grand final.
ESSENDON DISTRICT
Harry Albon, Craigieburn
Made his debut early in the year and went onto play 15 games and be named in the best five times.
Nicolas Aleksovski, Deer Park
Wasn’t impacted by a change of competitions with the rising star booting 37 goals for the season. Was a key part in a premiership too.
Oskar Balta, Essendon Doutta Stars
Balta has played all 18 games for Barry Prendergast’s side this year and is growing with every game.
Ben Bozinovski, Airport West
Was one of the Eagles’ best this season in an impressive year after crossing from Keilor.

Played a key role for a club on the rise. Caffari has taken his game to another level this season.
Jackson Cardillo, Rupertswood
An exciting player who has consistently been among his side’s better players this season.

A new recruit at the start of the season who has excelled in Keilor’s stacked line-up. In seven games, he has 15 goals.
Anthony De Lorenzi, Oak Park
Continued on from where he left off last season with the young gun going onto play a key role in his side’s premiership.
Costa Detsikas, Moonee Valley
Booted 36 goals from 17 games this season, held goalless just once.
Matt Foley, Strathmore
A consistent in the Mores side this season with 14 games.
Ned Gentile, Airport West
Hasn’t shied away after the step up to Premier Division and has impressed once again.
Max Griffin, Maribyrnong Park
Griffin has been a shining light for the Lions in a difficult season and should find himself right in the mix for his side’s best-and-fairest.
Aaron Hilton, Pascoe Vale
Continues to grow as a player for the Panthers and remains as a senior regular.
Jason Kenneth, Greenvale
Made the move from Westmeadows in the off-season and has impressed in the top tier. His rise in the coming years will be exciting to watch.

Max Panagiotopoulos, Aberfeldie
Has shown he’s capable of hitting the scoreboard this season, often playing some of his better footy against finals contenders.
Blake Polley, Craigieburn
Debuted earlier in the year and consistently held his spot in the side, going onto play 15 games.
Michael Portelli, Westmeadows
Portelli has established himself as one of the Tigers’ best players with 10 mentions in the best this year.
Luke Reichelt, Roxburgh Park
Won his club’s best-and-fairest last season and has gone onto enjoy another standout year in 2023.
Bailey Ryan, Hillside
What a player this young guy is. Earned a VFL debut thanks to his form with the Sharks. A real match winner.
Noah Scott, Pascoe Vale
Made his senior debut at 16 this season and played six games when available.
Ayden Skroce, Coburg Districts
One of the most talented young players in Division 2. Skroce was named in the best in six out of the 10 games he has played.
Ibrahim Taha, West Coburg
Back at his junior club this year. Taha finished with 69 goals for the season.
Giacomo Thomas, Essendon Doutta Stars
Provided a fantastic target up forward for the Stars leading the goalkicking for his side.
Blake Tirchett, Sunbury Kangaroos
Another under-18 player as recently as last year, Tirchett locked down a place in the Kangaroos’ line-up this season, playing every game.
NORTHERN
Harrison Andronaco, Greensborough
The young forward is on Coburg’s VFL list but played every game at Greensborough this season. In his first season at War Memorial Reserve, the 20-year-old earnt 11 mentions in the best (second most at the club) and booted 14 goals in an impressive campaign.
Zane Barzen, Heidelberg
The 22-year-old was on Carlton’s VFL list last year but is full-time with the Tigers this season. After playing a key defensive role in last year’s premiership, Barzen has shifted forward in 2023 and leads Heidelberg’s offence with 46 majors in 16 appearances, finishing fourth in the league goalkicking award.
Ethan Bateman, Laurimar
Turned 21 this year but despite his youth is one of the best key position players in the competition. Played mainly in the ruck last year as the Power made the grand final but has settled more in defence this season. A superb season was recognised with a place in the NFNL Division 3 Team of the Year.
Will Cookson, Hurstbridge
One of only six Bridges to play all 19 games this season and leads the club with 12 mentions in the best, highlighting his stellar 2023 campaign. The 22-year-old has cemented his place in the Hurstbridge midfield and could be in line for a club best-and-fairest run and Team of the Year honours.
Andrew Elward, Diamond Creek
Played just six senior games last season but the 20-year-old has exploded this year and become a key part of Diamond Creek‘s grand final side. Played 20 games in a breakout season, kicked 10 goals and was among the Creekers best in their preliminary final win over St Mary’s.
Ben Fisher, Greensborough
The 20-year-old has been given the unenviable task of trying to fill Nick Riddle’s boots at fullback and done a fine job. Missed eight weeks earlier in the season but made a strong return, earning a mention in the best in two of his final four games.
Seb Francis-Perkins, Old Eltham Collegians
Cemented his place in the Turtles senior line-up as a 17-year-old and is now arguably the club’s No. 1 midfielder at 18. Francis-Perkins was running third in the NFNL Division 3 Coaches’ MVP voting when it went behind closed doors and was named on the wing in the Team of the Year.
Josh Hamilton, North Heidelberg
On North Melbourne’s VFL list but has been in Bulldogs colours all season. Fresh off the Northern Knights list, Hamilton is already a key member of North’s defence with his eye-catching run-and-carry. Earnt 10 mentions in the best in his 18 appearances, equal first at the club.
Zach Hudson, Macleod
One of the recruits of the year having crossed from St Mary’s looking for a higher standard of football. Has adapted to Division 1 with aplomb, tackling some of the best rucks in local footy. The 23-year-old has been in the Kangas best in seven of his 16 appearances.
Mitchell Kalpakis, South Morang
Hard to believe Kalpakis is still only 21. A bona fide star of the competition as a two-time Team of the Year centre half-back in Division 3 and enjoyed a strong season as the Lions stepped up to Division 2. Played all bar one game as South Morang surged to a fourth-placed finish.
Dayne Kellett, Mernda
Kellett’s, along with several other young guns’, improvement is a major factor in Mernda’s rise this season. After eight games last season, the 22-year-old played 18 matches this season and was among the best in nine of them. His outstanding season was recognised with a place in the NFNL Division 3 Team of the Year.
James Lucente, Watsonia
Given the keys to the Saints‘ attack this season and finished the campaign as the NFNL Division 2 leading goalkicker with 59 goals. The 22-year-old came through the Northern Knights and made his senior debut for Macleod before arriving at Watsonia. A big part of the club’s group of talented youngsters.
Huon Macgibbon, St Mary’s
Played all 17 games last year on his way to becoming arguably the Burras No. 1 key defender but has moved into the ruck this season and blossomed. Has revelled in the responsibility in midfield this season and been a big part of the Burras rise to a preliminary final appearance.
Noah Mooney, Laurimar
At just 18, the young gun is playing the hardest position in the game – centre half-forward – and doing it superbly. Mooney‘s 30 goals in 18 games saw him recognised with NFNL Division 3 Team of the Year honours. Won Laurimar the qualifying final off his own boot with a stunning fourth-quarter burst when all seemed lost.
Lachie Potter, South Morang
Returned to his junior club this season after back-to-back Team of the Year campaigns with Watsonia. The former Northern Knight has been a big part of the Lions‘ success this season in stepping up to NFNL Division 2, playing 18 matches.
Angus Seivers, Greensborough
Hard to believe he’s still 19 given his size, athleticism and experience. Is already a leader of Greensborough’s backline and probably gets marked harshly given the expectations. A Team of the Year candidate after 11 mentions in the best in his 18 appearances.
OUTER EAST
Konner Alccott, Gembrook Cockatoo
Still eligible for under 19s, the smart and skilful wingman played in the Brookers’ senior premiership in 2022. His father Dean was a wingman in two flags in 2000 and 2004.
Tom Atalla, Upwey Tecoma
The young ruck won the league best and fairest in the under-19 competition last season and has made an immediate impact at senior level this year. He acts as a midfielder once the ball hits grass.
Callum Bourne, Gembrook Cockatoo
The teenager played in Emerald’s under 19 premiership last year. Hard-nosed, courageous defender who can make an impact in the midfield. His father Chris was a ruckman in the club’s 2000 flag.
Harry Brain, Narre Warren
Runs all day, and is having a terrific season on a wing for the grand-final bound Maggies.
Harry Correa, Alexandra
Has just turned 18 and is in his second season of senior footy. He plays wing and has elite speed and athletic ability and beautiful skills.
Ned Ford, Olinda Ferny Creek
Despite still being eligible for under-17 footy, Ford played 11 matches and kicked 13 majors this season.

The Bloods’ small forward dipped into his bag of tricks to fire off seven goals in Round 5. Explosive, good pace and he’s good on both sides of his body.
Sam Hoghton, Officer
The 19-year-old is an exciting talent with a bright future. He’s made an impact with both Gippsland Power and Officer this season.
Percy Hyett, Olinda Ferny Creek
Hyett played 16 matches this season and was listed among the Bloods’ best seven times. Most of which came against top seeds Narre Warren, Wandin and Woori Yallock.
Jack Hourihan, Mt Evelyn
A key position player who is great in the air and on the ground, super clean and skilful for a key position player.
Will Howe, Narre Warren
Howe followed up his 68 majors in Narre Warren’s premiership last year with 60 goals this home-and-away season.
Bailey Humphrey, Warburton Millgrove
The teenager was a livewire up forward, kicking 47 goals, including two bags of seven.
Josiah Kyle, Hallam
Kyle is bursting at the seams with talent and Hallam was stoked to have gained him as a mid-season boost. A former coach of his compared the former AFL-Saint’s skillset to that of Jeff ‘The Wizard’ Farmer.
Rhys Mortlock, Broadford
A wholehearted wingman who is a good decision maker and uses the ball well. His second and third efforts are outstanding. Runs all day.
Charlie Neilson, Broadford
Strongly-built, versatile player who always puts his head over the ball. Good kick for goal and a smart ball user.

Jack McGough, Emerald
Just turned 18 and is in his first season of senior footy. A strong lead-up mark, wingman.
Caleb Marshall, Gembrook Cockatoo
Played in Emerald’s under 19 premiership last year. Joining the Brookers he has played every position on the ground. His father Jamie is a former Emerald senior coach.

Possesses plenty of X factor and class … likes to take the game on, enjoys flying for marks and knows where the goals are — he’s booted 34 this season.
Isaac Seskis, Emerald
Midfielder, forward who is a great ball getter, reads the play well, strong at the stoppages. Just turned 18.
Connor Smith, Wandin
Onball and forward, who is a classy finisher. Taken that skill set to the starting midfield group this year. Played six games with the Western Bulldogs VFL side.
Blake Simondson, Berwick Springs
An exciting prospect who got on to North Melbourne’s VFL list but got a fracture in the foot. Has explosive speed and match-winning qualities.
Isaac Tonkin, Olinda Ferny Creek
Like Ford, Tonkin is also eligible for under-17 footy. He’s played five matches for the Bloods this season.
Harry Van Durren, Wandin
Playing only his third year of football but has become one of the most effective wingmen in the competition. Elite runner who impacts at both ends and regularly hits the scoreboard.
Sam Wicks, Upwey Tecoma
Wicks was still eligible for under-19s but was close to the Tigers’ best mid due to his attack on the footy. Coach Stuart Hill said: “It’s physicality you don’t expect from an under-19 when they come in … he looks like has been playing senior footy for five yea
SOUTHERN
Toby Arms, Springvale Districts
The young ruck has impressed a lot this season with his willingness to compete when often outsized. He loves playing in the ruck, which is half the battle. He was named in the best in the Demons’ two critical wins over St Paul’s McKinnon and Port Melbourne Colts.
Lachlan Benton, Dingley
By nailing the fundamentals, Benton has become a bit of a coach’s dream. He averaged 26 disposals this home-and-away season.

Makaio Haywood, Hampton Park
The young gun had a phenomenal season, finishing fourth in the league best and fairest with 18 votes.
Rex Kilburn, Cheltenham
Kilburn has been a regular on the rising stars lists and it’s understandable why. The dynamic player has played 17 matches in a strong Rosellas outfit.
Sean Lai, Cheltenham
A 17-year-old with experience and composure beyond his years. The left-footer is simply a star.
Jordan Letts, Dingley
An unassuming teenager that patrols the Dingoes’ back six. Letts has rarely been beaten this year while also finding a fair bit of the footy himself. Played just six games in the under-19s but still won the league best and fairest.
Jordan Maloney, Port Melbourne Colts
A defender that reads the play really well and makes the right decisions with ball in hand. Maloney was a catalyst in the Colts’ memorable finals run.
Alec and Declan McComb, Cheltenham
The twin brothers have pace, smarts and, somehow, still have upside. The pair are key players in the well-oiled machine that is Des Ryan’s Cheltenham.
Oliver Moran, Cheltenham
Taken his game to a new level this year, Moran has gone from a player with potential to a bona fide star of the competition. He’s played all season with the Rosellas but a VFL club would be silly not to snap him up next year.
Matthew O’Brien, St Paul’s McKinnon
A tough, inside midfielder who wins his own footy. O’Brien was originally left off the Sandringham Zebras’ list but his form for the Bulldogs this season has seen him gain rapid interest from Collingwood.
Jake Robinson, Skye
Robinson became the Bombers’ youngest ever debutant this year when he played against East Malvern at 16 years old. He doesn’t go sideways, nor backwards with the footy, he takes the game on.
Dareo Rogers, Murrumbeena
The talented defender has gone about his business the right way this year. He was unluckily out of the Lions’ grand final side.
Sam Shaw, South Mornington
Shaw is a favourite down at Citation Reserve. The medium-sized forward works up the ground to find a stack of the footy before storming back down the stretch to hit the scoreboard. He is a part of the Southern academy directed by St Kilda star Brad Crouch and was among the Tigers’ best in their flag.
Eren Soylemez, Port Melbourne Colts
A crafty player, Soylemez has grown in leaps and bounds this year. He was pivotal for the Colts in their extra-time win over Springvale Districts, kicking his side’s two majors.
Holly Stephens, Skye
Daughter of club legend Corey Stephens, Skye has high hopes for Holly. Playing in the ruck in the senior women’s side, Stephens, 17, is often competing against girls twice her age. The Bombers are hoping she continues on to bigger and better things.
Blake Treble, Skye
As hard as a cat's head, Skye loves this kid. While some younger players are happy to let the ball come to them, Treble wastes no time in finding it himself.

Nick Collier, Dromana
The grandson of Albert Collier (a six-time VFL/AFL premiership player, Brownlow medallist and three-time Copeland medallist). Nick, 19, is making a name for himself as a tough and talented player, who possesses pace and strength. Can play everywhere but he’s slotted into a back pocket for the Tigers, and does it well. Likely to go to the VFL next year.
Clayton Gay, Hastings
Quality player, left footer and good user of the football off half back. Smart, reads the footy well.
Seth Harris, Frankston Bombers
Fit and competitive, the dashing midfielder is equally adept on both sides of his body. Played every senior game in 2023 and named in the Bombers best on eight occasions.
Henry Hayes, Rye
A dashing wing or half forward with good skills who has split his time between playing with the Dandenong Stingrays and Rye’s senior side, with good effect.
Mitch Harvey, Seaford
Developed nicely into an onballer, averaging close to 25 touches a game. He’s top age under 19s but played 16 games in the seniors; like his famous uncle Robert Harvey, Mitch has excellent endurance, the ability to run all day and he’s a good decision maker, composed with the ball and doesn’t blaze away.
Will Hose, Tyabb
The classy big man is captain of his club at only 21, and a two-time best and fairest winner.
Ben Kaddatz, Somerville
Under 19 eligible left-foot wingman, small in stature but hard at the contest; really calm with ball in hand, good user and plays his role well.
