A former AFL forward’s bid to play in a country footy grand final this weekend has fallen short.

It’s understood Kayne Pettifer’s injunction application to the Supreme Court on Friday was dismissed.

The former Richmond forward made the bid in an attempt to play in Kyabram’s Goulburn Valley League decider against Echuca on Sunday.

Pettier is currently serving a five-match ban after being found guilty of kneeing an opposition player in the head in an elimination final two weeks ago.

He has already served two matches.

Kyabram coach Paul Newman said Pettifer is going to ask for an injunction in the Supreme Court to be allowed to play in the Bombers decider at Shepparton.

“We find out more on that this afternoon,” Newman said.

“My understanding is it’s been to the appeal with the AFL body and this is a Supreme Court injunction order.

“It pretty much is a stay of proceedings, it will be heard at a later date, the case, but the injunction would allow him to play on the weekend.

“Of course the judge has got to grant that injunction, it will be heard later today or tomorrow morning.”

Newman said Pettifer was trying to do all he could to play in what would be his final game after announcing his retirement plans before the finals.

“He wants to leave no stone unturned, which is fantastic,” he said.

“We’ll wait and see how it goes.”
