Laurimar set to host first Anzac Day clash against Northern league Division 3 rivals Mernda

Laurimar and Mernda’s budding rivalry will go up a notch when the clubs face off on Anzac Day with both clubs honoured by the opportunity to play on one of Australia’s most solemn days.

Laurimar and Mernda’s budding rivalry will go up a notch when the clubs face off on Anzac Day.

The Power will host an Anzac Day clash for the first time at Laurimar Reserve, a fixture coach Justin Sherman hopes will become a permanent one.

The Anzac Day clash is one of six across the Northern league with Reservoir and Lalor also in action in Division 3.

Laurimar enters the clash undefeated after winning both of its matches this season, while the Demons are still searching for their first victory of the campaign.

Sherman said both clubs were excited to be involved on such a historic day.

“It’s obviously a great honour playing on such an memorable day,” he said.

“To be playing at home is very special and we’re really looking forward to being a part of it.

“Playing against Mernda — who we’ve built a strong rivalry against — it’s going to be a great contest and event for the community.

“This is the first time … and it’s something we see as hopefully an ongoing thing.”

Doreen RSL president Wes Wridgway is also involved with the Power and will speak to the players ahead of the match.

After a maiden finals appearance last year, Laurimar has made an ideal start to 2019 with wins over Reservoir and Lalor.

Josh Williamson and Jacson Cecil have formed a dynamic attacking partnership, kicking 13 and seven goals respectively.

Sherman is happy with the club’s start but isn’t letting his players get ahead of themselves.

“So far, so good. We’re not looking too far ahead,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of good wins but footy is a finicky game and it can change very quickly.

“We’ve got a couple of tough weeks coming up against Mernda and Panton Hill, so we need to be at the top of our game every week.

“I’ve said to the boys, keep driving our standards and control what we can … the way we train, the way we recover and the way we play. It’s pretty simple.”
