THE Northern Football League is set to welcome a new senior club next year with Laurimar Power advertising for players.

An advertisement posted on social media on Friday night said the club was looking to field its first senior teams in 2017 and was seeking expressions of interest from prospective players.

“LFC are very excited to be joining the NFL with our 1st (sic) senior teams in 2017,” the post read.

Laurimar has had junior sides in the NFL since 2010 and is based in Doreen.

Power president Alasdair Walker said the club saw senior, reserves and under-19 teams as a natural progression with their top-age juniors this year reaching under-16 level.

“We’ve got a working group together and that’s the idea,” Walker said.

“Predominantly to fill that gap between our juniors, our oldest age group is nearing the end of their junior careers.

“We want to have seniors for them so they can progress at the same club if they desire.”

The Power currently have a strong junior base and field 15 teams from under-9s to under-16s and girls’ sides.

Walker first flagged the possibility of senior teams in Whittlesea Leader in 2014, saying they were “definitely on our radar”.

The Power could follow a similar path to St Mary’s, which joined the NFL in 2009 as an offshoot of the St Mary’s Greensborough Junior Football Club.

The Burras have slowly built into a Division 3 premiership contender and won their first six matches this year.

NFL chief executive Peter McDougall told Local Footy on Sunday any bid from the Power to join the league’s senior ranks would not impact on Reservoir’s effort to return from recess.

The Mustangs won the Division 3 premiership last year but a crippling player shortage forced them to withdraw from Division 2 this year.

If Reservoir and Laurimar joined Division 3 next year, it would leave the NFL’s bottom tier with nine clubs.
