Powelltown has moved to secure its latest marquee signing, with an ex-AFL forward joining the fold.

Former Gold Coast and Carlton big man Daniel Gorringe has put pen to paper at the AFL Outer East Division 2 outfit for the next two seasons, just days after the club unveiled Jarrod Bayliss as its new senior coach.

The 200cm Gorringe was selected as a No. 10 draft pick for the Suns at the 2010 national draft, where he played 22 matches between 2011 and 2015. He crossed to Carlton for the 2016 and 2017 seasons, where he played a further four matches.

An existing friendship between coach Bayliss and Gorringe helped land the ex-Sun and Blue, after he played 13 matches for EFL club Park Orchards during Bayliss’ stint as senior coach in 2018, before the pair aligned with Premier club Wandin in 2019.

Gorringe’s move to the Demons also links him up with former Wandin and Park Orchards teammate Michael Fowkes, who has also joined the club.

The 26-game AFL player said he was excited at the prospect of playing in finals, after Powelltown fell agonisingly short of a grand final berth in 2019.

“I’m looking forward to joining Powelltown and enjoying my footy, I just want to have fun but in the back of my mind I want to win a flag,” Gorringe said in a statement.

“I’ve never played in a final but I think Powelltown Football Club has the right people/players in place to make something special happen in 2021 and I want to be a part of that.”

Bayliss recently outlined that his recruiting strategy would aim to support the likes of key forward Dean Roy and ruckman Ben Wratten in the club’s pursuit for success.

“It’s just to put some strength around those boys and the other good players to fill the gap and help them take that next step,” he said.

Club president Geoff Mooney said the club was thrilled with Gorringe’s signing as the club anticipates a return to the field in 2021.

“We had a plan and a strategy, and we put it all into place, and it’s come through … at the moment we’re kicking goals,” he said.

“He brings so much and so much excitement to the club as a player and as a person, and that’s fantastic to have.

“Let’s hope that football can get up, because I think it’s going to be a fantastic year for the club on and off the field, so that’s what we’re looking forward to – getting the supporters out there, having football back and having something to cheer.”
