Former Adelaide Crow Myles Poholke returns to Sorrento

Some big signings for MPNFL club Sorrento, securing a former Saint and a recently delisted Crow.

Delisted Adelaide Crow Myles Poholke is “pumped’’ to be back at Sorrento and has the scope to be one of the best players in the MPNFL in 2021.

That’s the opinion of his brother, Leigh Poholke, Sorrento’s star full-forward.

The siblings will form a potent two-pronged attack in 2021 as Sorrento chases the premiership after successive grand final defeats.

“I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t one of the best players in the comp,’’ Leigh said.

“But I’m a bit biased because he’s my brother.

“It will be good to have him back. He’s pumped. He hasn’t been this excited for footy for a few years.’’

Sorrento has also signed former St Kilda player Will Johnson.

The 31-year-old, who played one AFL game in 2011, also played with Sandringham, Box Hill and Port Melbourne in the VFL and for the past five years has played with Collegians in the VAFA.

Poholke, who played all of his juniors at Sorrento, was taken by Adelaide in the 2016 draft at pick No.44 and played 16 AFL games across four seasons.

The Poholke brothers last played together in 2016, when Myles played four games in Sorrento’s seniors.

Myles, 22, was delisted by the Crows in November but maintained his fitness levels hoping to get picked up by another AFL club.

When that didn’t happen, he signed with Sorrento last month.

“He’s had the biggest off season he’s ever had so he’s probably as fit as he’s ever been at this time of year,’’ Leigh said.

“He will play midfield, resting forward. He can take a good clunk. He’ll probably spend some time forward I’d imagine — he’d be a pretty hard match up down there, but (he will play) predominantly in the midfield, him, (Robbie) Turnbull, Mitch Hallahan, Shannon Gladman, Zach Byrns.’’

Leigh said Myles, who played five AFL games last season, should prove a handful for rival teams in MPNFL Division 1.

“He dominates the SANFL, averages 20 touches a game and over a goal a game,’’ Leigh said.

The Sharks will have Melbourne captain Max Gawn involved as a specialist coach, helping out the ruck and mids and Under 19s throughout the year.

He has a house at nearby Blairgowrie.

“He took my Under 19s for a session recently,’’ Leigh Poholke said.

“You’ve never seen a bunch of 19 year olds drop their jaws so much. He’s just a cracking fella. He’s just a funny fella, an absolute cracker.’’

Former Collingwood and Fitzroy player Murray Brown has been appointed Sorrento’s development team coach.

Brown, who played 53 league games with the Magpies and Lions in the 1980s, lives locally.

“Murray is phenomenal, how he didn’t coach more football at a higher level is amazing,’’ Poholke said.

“His football brain and energy and training standards are fantastic.’’

Sorrento ruckman Ryan Potter has been appointed Sharks senior assistant coach. He will be Luke Tapscott’s “right hand man’’, and in charge of the bench on game day.
