EFNL 2023: Brett Moyle appointed Norwood coach

A two-time flag coach is back in the Eastern league’s Premier Division, this time as coach of Norwood.

TWO-time premiership mentor Brett Moyle is back in the Eastern league’s top-flight – this time as senior coach of Norwood.

The Premier Division outfit recently confirmed the 43-year-old’s appointment, succeeding Marty Pask who stood down from his post of five years at the end of the season.

Moyle coached Wantirna South last season but exited the club with one home-and-away match left as the Devils missed the finals, finishing seventh in Division 1 with eight wins and 10 losses.

He coached North Ringwood into the league’s top division following flags in 2012 and ’14, before heading up the Eastern’s representative side in 2017.

Moyle, who played 48 matches for St Kilda from 2000 to 2004 before helping Balwyn to premierships in 2005 and ’08, described the Norwood gig as an “attractive proposition”.

“It was, I guess, flattering for me that there was contact coming from people at Norwood,” he said.

“It’s a pretty sought-after role at a club that’s been able to win (a premiership) in Premier before, well-resourced, well-run, and a pretty good list – for all those reasons, it made it a pretty attractive proposition for me.

“Footy clubs are great places to be generally, which was part of why I decided to jump back into it.”

Moyle coached against Norwood for several seasons during his time at the North Ringwood helm, where he returned for a second stint in 2018.

“Spending so many years at North Ringwood and (Norwood) being a highly-respected rival, just down the road, (I’m) obviously very familiar with the club and we always had a very respectful rivalry,” he said.

“I’ve always respected how Norwood’s gone about it, and now to be getting the opportunity to be part of a club that can seriously contend in Premier Division is super exciting.”

Norwood finished eighth of the Premier Division’s 12 teams this year, missing the finals for a seventh consecutive season.

Moyle was bullish his new group could soon bridge the gap on its rivals for its first finals appearance since 2015.

The club last won a senior premiership in 2014.

“What I do know, is that they have been able to do it in the past at this level … over the next few weeks I need to work out where we can add maybe one or two to add to the list,” Moyle said.

“I think there’s potential there to make that step (into finals) over the next year or two.”
