EFNL 2023: Wantirna South and senior coach Brett Moyle part ways

The Devils will soon hit the market for their next senior coach following the exit of Brett Moyle. Latest here.

WANTIRNA South and senior coach Brett Moyle have parted ways, effective immediately.

The club confirmed Moyle left the role on Sunday through a “mutual agreement” following the Devils’ 85-point loss to Bayswater – which all but ended their Division 1 finals hopes.

Devils assistant and premiership player Michael Jamieson will step into the head role for this Saturday’s final-round clash with North Ringwood.

Moyle took over as Wantirna South mentor ahead of this season following a decorated coaching career with North Ringwood, winning two premierships to help the club into the Eastern league’s top-flight.

He later headed up Eastern’s representative team in 2017.

The Devils hit the halfway mark of the season with six wins and three losses – on track for a second-straight finals appearance – before a run of six consecutive defeats derailed their campaign.

They’ve won just one match from the past eight, with the club losing around 16 players to overseas travel in the second half of the season according to Wantirna South football director Rick Moloney.

Moloney said a meeting on Sunday determined the fate of the dual premiership coach, with both parties amicable in the split.

“We just caught up Sunday and basically had a mutual agreement to part ways,” Moloney said.

“We’ve got nothing but great respect for Brett – just a fantastic guy, really well-liked from everyone at the club and really respected in the footy community.

“It just didn’t work out – it was just one of those things (and) sometimes it happens and it’s just how things played out.

“He’s always welcome back at the club.”

Moyle enjoyed a successful playing career in the Eastern league after a 48-match stint with St Kilda from 2000 to 2004, helping Balwyn to two premierships in 2005 and ’08 – the latter as captain.

Flags with North Ringwood followed as coach in 2012 (Division 3) and ’14 (Division 2).

He led North Ringwood a second time in 2018, with a four-year coaching hiatus following before taking on the Devils’ gig.

Wantirna South sits eighth on the ladder with a 7-10 record ahead of the final round.
