What a day out for Coldstream’s Darcy Fritsch.

The 22-year-old put on an all-time masterclass up forward in his side’s 171-point win over Kilsyth on Saturday, kicking 20 – yes, 20 goals – of his side’s 28.17 (185) total in the Eastern league’s Division 4.

The star Cougar had an inkling he might have been in for a big one after getting on the end of a few early, but certainly wasn’t expecting to fill his boots to that extreme.

“It was pretty unbelievable actually … I started off just kicking a couple early and I thought it might be a good day, and they just kept coming!,” Fritsch said.

“I was just loving it and I’m finally kicking straight.”

Fritsch spent 2019 on Casey’s list in the VFL, but injuries curtailed any opportunity to progress at state level.

But playing at a higher grade is something he harbours ambitions to pursue again.

“It’s definitely something I want to have another crack at,” he said.

“I was pretty unlucky with injury when I was down at Casey as well.

“COVID got the better of me a bit with my weight, but (I’ll be) getting my fitness back and finding my feet again and then I might have a crack at it maybe next year or the year after.”

But Saturday’s 20-goal haul is another chapter in the decorated Fritsch legacy at Coldstream.

Darcy’s father, Scott, played more than 300 games for the club – including its last senior flag in 2001.

You may have also heard of brother Bayley, who came through the junior program and made his mark at senior level, before winning a spot on Casey’s list and later Melbourne where he’s played more than 60 games since 2018.

Darcy spent 2019 aligned to Norwood in the Eastern league’s Premier Division where he played five matches in an injury interrupted season, before making the move back to Coldstream – the club where he grew up playing.

He describes it as coming “home”.

“It’s massive – there’s nothing better than coming back, I know everyone around the club, I bloody learnt to walk down there,” he said.

“It’s just so good getting back around people you love and there’s nothing better than playing with the mates you’ve grown up with as well.

“Even going back to Coldstream this year, the best players in our division are still just as good as the average players in high divisions, so I reckon it’s not bad footy.”
