ONLY a week after surviving a scare against battlers Nunawading, Silvan sprang a surprise 34-point win Kilsyth on Saturday to all but rule the Cougars out of the Division 4 finals race.

The Cats led by just two points at the final break before kicking six goals to one in the final quarter to record a 15.11 (101) to 10.7 (67) victory.

It was just Silvan’s third win for the season and gave the Cats consecutive victories for the first time since the opening two rounds of 2016.

“We’ve done everything right but win senior games of footy and that was only a matter of time,” Silvan coach Trent Martin said.

“There’s plenty of positives coming out of the club since I got there but we just haven’t been able to win.”

Captain Jarryd Dietzal was among the best players in his in his 100th game for the club, while Dan Dickson was a focal point up forward with three goals.

The defeat leaves Kilsyth two games and percentage out of the top four with seven rounds remaining, with the top four seemingly set two months out from finals.

After this weekend’s clash against Nunawading, the Cougars have a difficult stretch of games against finals bound sides Glen Waverley Hawks, Whitehorse Pioneers and East Burwood.

After kicking just one goal in the first quarter to trail by 11 points at the first change, Martin said he was pleased with the way his side persisted throughout the contest.

“We’ve hung in there with all the top teams, other than Glen Waverley, who I think are probably the team to beat, in our competition,” he said.

“Fitness has probably been a bit of an issue, we’ve been blown away but just to finish a game off shows we can do it and our best can compete against a pretty good side in Kilsyth.

“We’re only a little club but we could certainly hear the supporters out on the ground, I reckon the whole town was there getting behind us.”
