GLEN Waverley Hawks coach Ryan Flack has praised his side’s resilience after overcoming a 0-2 start to move to second on the Eastern Football League Division 4 ladder.

A 13-goal haul from recruit Matthew Ferguson helped Glen Waverley to a 146-point over Nunawading on Saturday, giving the Hawks five wins on the spin to move a game and percentage clear inside the top four.

Flack said his side had shown significant improvement since its first two losses against Whitehorse Pioneers and East Burwood, showing the form that was expected at the start of the year.

“We were certainly hopeful and remained confident we could turn things around,” Flack said.

“Once you lose those first two games, there’s a chance you can lose a bit of confidence and you question whether you’re going really as well as what you thought you might be.

“From that perspective I’ve been pretty happy with the resilience the guys have shown, they didn’t get too down in the dumps and by and large we’ve just worked pretty hard to get the chemistry.

“We’ve got a few new players as well so that was always going to take a little bit of time to gel.”

The Hawks have a dangerous forward line in Ferguson, spearhead Adam Amin and Sam Parlapiano, while extra midfield depth has helped the Hawks’ onball brigade.

Last year’s best and fairest winner Ryan Goold is also yet to play a senior game this year as he juggles football with a new role in the police force.

“We see there is still an absolute role there for him at some point but we’re not getting forced into picking guys who aren’t quite ready to play,” Flack said.

“Selection is becoming a lot harder and it’s probably a luxury we haven’t had in the past few years.

“There are guys at the moment who are unlucky to miss out but that’s probably a sign of how healthy your footy club is.”
