From a 20-goal haul to an unfortunate feathered casualty, Saturday’s local footy action had it all.

Catch up on the weird, wonderful, and everything in between below.

20-GOAL SPECTACULAR

Longwarry’s Jason Wells almost became the first player in local footy to kick 100 goals this season.

The Ellinbank District player, entering this weekend, needed 25 goals to reach the milestone.

He kicked 20 goals for the Crows in their 185-point smashing of Poowong.

Wells kicked 20 of the 34 goals for the game.

He is now on 95 goals for the season and should bring up the 100 goal milestone next week.

SEAGULL DOWN

Somerville’s Kai Suparta took the term ‘sharpshooter’ a little too seriously in Somerville’s clash with Seaford.

Suparta was lining up for goal when his set shot struck a seagull flying overhead flush and sent it plummeting from the sky into the turf at RF Miles Recreation Reserve.

“The bird is f****** dead,” one punter can be heard saying in a video of the incident.

The seagull lay motionless on the turf for a few seconds before Somerville’s Ben Neilson picked it up and placed it outside the field of play.

The kick started left, but looked like it may have drifted back toward goal before it deflected well to the right after striking the seagull.

Fortunately it didn’t cost Somerville, who prevailed by two points in the MPNFL Division 2 thriller.

BACK-TO-BACK BAGS OF 10

Rheedyi Adam Amin dazzled with 10 goals for Scoresby against Fair Park in the Eastern League’s Division 3.

It was the second week running the prolific goal-kicker has booted double figures, having also kicked 10 against Ferntree Gully last week. The hauls take his season tally to 58 goals from 11 matches. It comes after he broke through the 100-goal barrier

Scoresby prevailed by 136 points in the thumping win, kicking 25.13 (163) to 4.3 (27). Declan McBean also chipped in with six majors.

MULLET’S SURGE TO 100 CONTINUES

Wandin gun Aaron Mullett did his chances of breaking through the 100-goal barrier in 2025 no harm with after kicking six against Mt Evelyn in the Outer East’s Premier Division.

The Bulldogs toppled Mt Evelyn by 53 points to maintain a two-game buffer on top of the ladder.

Mullet played 98 AFL games for North Melbourne and Carlton between 2011 and 2018, and has now kicked 75 goals in nine games this season.

IN HONOUR OF LEGEND

Ararat paid tribute to club legend Kevin Tassell with a 52-point win over Nhill in the top of the table clash in the Wimmera league.

Tassell died recently and was a premiership winning player and coach of the Rats in 1971.

He played 238 games for the club and represented the Wimmera in interleague on eight occasions.

Tassell is a life member of the club.

Ararat continued its strong start to the season, beating the Tigers to remain unbeaten at the top.

The team wore black armbands as a tribute to the former club coach.

LAST QUARTER HEROICS STUN LIONS

Darley kicked seven goals to one in the final quarter to remain on top in the Ballarat league after beating Sunbury by eight points.

Down by 31 points at three-quarter-time the Devils charged home in the final term to beat the Lions in the top-four battle.

Sunbury looked on track to join Darley at 8-2 for the season after kicking seven goals in the third term to set up the lead.

But Darley had other ideas with Brett Bewley and Nick Hinds, who both were among the best, helping the Devils to the win.

EAGLES DOWN LOCAL RIVALS

Cranbourne toppled a depleted Narre Warren side to claim a crucial win in its bid to avoid relegation.

The 19-point win was Cranbourne’s second of the season – and first over local rival Narre Warren since the Magpies joined the Southern league – although it wasn’t enough to lift them off the bottom of the competitive Southern ladder with Port Melbourne also picking up a win.

DINGLEY MAKES IT 10-0

The Dingoes have been the team to beat all season in the Southern league’s top flight, and have now extended their unbeaten run to an impressive 10 games.

Last year’s grand finalists dealt with the in-form Bentleigh with ease, cruising to a 52-point win.

Jack Ferraro was the spearhead of the triumph with seven goals, while former NFL punter and AFL player Arryn Siposs booted four in what was his best return of 2025.

The result reopens the top-five fight in NFNL Division 2 as fifth-placed Lower Plenty is only a game ahead of ninth-placed Old Paradians.

GOAL OF THE YEAR WINNER

Bundoora has had little luck when it comes to close games this season. The Bulls have lost games by eight, 13 and twice by one point. However, that curse was broken on Saturday with a nailbiting six-point win over Eltham at Central Park.

The visitors roared home after being down by 10 points at three-quarter-time. With scores locked, Luke Lo Valvo produced one of the goals of the year to snatch the four points. Taking the ball in the middle of the ground, he took three bounces before calmly finishing under pressure.

The siren rang less than a minute later to secure a 15.5 (95) to 14.5 (89) victory. Lachie Urbon, Riley Greene and Isaac McMillian were best on.
