Glen Waverley Hawks have appointed first-time senior coach Dylan Price in their bid to remain in EFL Division 3.

Price, 31, served as an assistant this year under Con Borg, who stepped down from the role at the end of the year after one season in the position.

Glen Waverley was promoted to Division 3 as part of the league restructure last year, limping to a 3-15 record.

Its only three wins came against the winless Chirnside Park.

“I think what was disappointing was we were competitive in so many games but couldn’t win them,” Price said.

“Having only beaten Chirnside Park for our three wins, I don’t think anyone saw that as a pass mark.”

Price played his football at Upwey Tecoma and was a senior assistant at the AFL Outer East club in 2017 and 2018.

“I’ve always had the ambition to be a senior coach and Glen Waverley was a great fit for me,” Price said.

Glen Waverley was without its two leading goalkickers from 2018 — Matt Ferguson (Warbuton) and Adam Amin (overseas) — and struggled for options in attack.

It averaged just 50 points per game.

Price said it was hoped Amin, who spent the winter playing cricket in England, would return next year but the Hawks would target forwards over the summer.

“We definitely don’t want to be in the same position we were this year,” he said.

“The aim is to put together a pre-season and get a list together that can challenge for those top spots and be competitive rather than be the cellar dwellers.”

Price, a school teacher at St Joseph’s in Ferntree Gully, said the club wanted to remain competitive in Division 3.

“We’ll need to have a big pre-season and look to improve our fitness … we’ve got the biggest ground in the comp,” he said.

“I’ll be looking to get a lot of improvement out of our list, particularly because they are young and we’re also looking, at the same time, to bring in a bit of experience and leadership in to top up.”
