Glen Waverley Hawks have started their search for a new coach after Con Borg’s decision to step down.

Borg said the club had a bright future but increasing work commitments had made it difficult for him to commit to the role.

He was appointed coach last year after Ryan Flack stepped down following the grand final defeat.

“Probably in the second half of the year, work has picked up a hell of a lot and it’s been hard to juggle,” Borg said.

“I had a couple of good assistants down there that helped out taking the reins a little bit during the week but it just got too much.”

Borg arrived at Central Reserve after a long coaching stint at Northern league club St Mary’s.

It was his first season in the EFL.

Glen Waverley finished with a 3-15 record in its first season in Division 3.

Borg said he wanted to remain at the Hawks but work was his priority.

“I think the potential down there is enormous,” he said.

“There is a massive ceiling that they can hit.

“There’s obviously a few things they need to work pretty hard on but they’re aware of that.

“They’ve got the facilities there, the culture is great but probably the junior side of it is something to focus on, which the club knows they’ve got to work on, and getting an under-19s up and running.

“There’s some good stuff going on down there. I would have loved to have stayed on.

“It reminded me very much of St Mary’s, which I enjoyed a lot and I could see them building to be a similar sort of club.”

The Hawks have advertised for the position and applications close on September 6.

Ferntree Gully and Whitehorse Pioneers are the other fourth-tier clubs to have advertised for a new coach in 2020.
