GLEN Waverley Hawks coach Ryan Flack thought there was much to like about his side’s two-point semi-final defeat against Whitehorse Pioneers.
Other than the scoreboard.
RAMS END 14-YEAR WAIT FOR FINALS SUCCESS
WILLIAMS STARS IN SCORESBY WIN
The Pioneers won through to their first grand final in 11 years after ending the Hawks’ 16-game winning streak in a thrilling game on Saturday.
Despite the still Spring-like conditions, the Hawks were left to rue wasted opportunities in front of goal.
Glen Waverley finished with three more scoring shots but was left to swallow a 7.11 (53) to 6.15 (51) defeat.
But with the beauty of finishing in the top two, the Hawks will again reload this weekend against East Burwood in the preliminary final for a chance at the decider.
In a game that ebbed and flowed, neither side led by more than a goal at any change before Whitehorse progressed to its first grand final since the 2007 premiership.

MOOROOLBARK SET TO HAVE A NEW COACH IN 2019
“We did a lot right but we just didn’t finish well, didn’t use the footy well and there were a couple of times in the game where we had control and were in front on the scoreboard but probably made a couple of costly errors, just to allow them back in,” Flack said.
“As I said to the guys, that’s what you work hard for during the year and why you’re keen to get the double chance, so if you have a day where you’re really inaccurate or you make some bad errors, you do have a chance to go again.
“We’ve just got to bring that same competitiveness that we brought the other day, which I thought was really good, but hopefully we can be a little bit more clean when we finish.”
After combining for 111 goals during the home-and-away season, Adam Amin and Matthew Ferguson were held to just one major each by the Pioneers.
“Whitehorse have got some really good intercepting marking players and I have to take my hat off to them,” Flack said.
“Where I thought, if I was their coach, you’d be thinking maybe spoil that but they backed themselves and backed their judgment.”
