HEATHMONT will be hunting scalps in the next fortnight as it looks to break into the Eastern Football League Division 3 top three for the first time this year.

The Jets have prevailed just once against a fellow top-five side this season, with that result coming back in Round 5 against The Basin in a 20-point win.

But the next fortnight presents an opportunity for Heathmont to improve its 1-3 record against top-five sides with assignments against undefeated Ringwood and flag fancy Boronia.

Heathmont’s combined losing margin against top-three sides Ringwood, Boronia and Scoresby has been just 32 points.

“In all of those games combined we’ve only lost three quarters so that just tells you a little bit,” coach Joel Cordwell said.

“We’re definitely very competitive but we just haven’t got the job done.

“We just need to focus on that consistency and winning the key moments, the big moments.”

The Jets notched their ninth win of the season on Saturday after a gritty 23-point win over South Belgrave.

The Saints were kept scoreless in the final quarter as Heathmont recorded a 6.9 (45) to 3.4 (22) victory.

“We are a pretty young team, I think on the weekend again we had 10 blokes 20 or younger,” Cordwell said.

“It is great we’re blooding these young kids and they’re getting opportunities in big games and learning off good players Brent English, Gary Conyers and Dylan (Sverns).

“The personnel has changed a lot this year so we’re just learning, and we learnt it last year how to play in big games, but we’ve got to learn it again just given the way our list has changed.”

Sverns was a late withdrawal with a knee complaint but will resume this weekend, Alistair Knudsen played in the reserves on Saturday, while David Sindrey and Jon Knudsen are close to returning from injury.

“We’re slowly gathering some troops but we seem to lose a few along the way as well,” Cordwell said.

“Our depth is really good and we’re developing guys and to be honest it is not really affecting our performance.”
