Sitting back to reflect on Greenvale’s premiership, coach Troy Newton sees a consistent theme of perseverance.

Since arriving at the Jets in 2021, Newton has coached the EDFL Division 1 women’s team to two grand final losses but now they’re feeling on top of the world.

Newton’s side prevailed 8.4 (52) to 7.3 (45) win over Burnside Heights to win the premiership and earn promotion to Premier Division.

It comes after a year where the Jets sometimes “struggled for numbers due to injuries and availability”.

“It’s been a journey to get here,” Newton said.

“The last few years we’ve probably been one of the best sides throughout the home-and-away season and then just haven’t been able to get it done in the finals series.

“We had a real focus on constantly getting better with every game, the last month has been really strong at training and in games.

“We managed our way through the back end of the season, we rested players when we could, it meant we were able to play our best footy over the last few weeks.”

After training by one straight kick at the first break, the Jets sparked to life with a four-goal to one second term to get the game on their terms.

And despite being challenged by the Bears in the second half, Newton’s side were eventually able to hang on.

“It was the best quarter we’ve played all year,” Newton said of the second term.

“We were able to get on top in the centre and around stoppages, importantly we took our chances going forward.

“I thought Burnside was able to get on top in the middle and our backline stood tall. Our mids got to work when the game was really tight in the last quarter.

“It was a real even spread, everyone had their moments.”

Burnside gun Krissy Trang was awarded the best on ground medal as Newton paid tribute to the opposition.

“I thought Krissy and Holly McGregor were two standouts for them,” he said.

“She was a deserved medal winner. Burnside are a great football team.”

Kiara Delia, Sophie Pettman, Amy Hakim, Alisa Magri, Talia Motta and Grace Matser were all named in the best for Greenvale.

Magri and Motta finished with three goals each.
