EDFL: The best players from Division 2 in 2022

There were are a number of impressive performers in the EDFL Division 2 competition this season. Here’s our top 25.

The Essendon District Football League Division 2 season has been run and won.

Keilor Park completed a fairytale season with its first premiership in over 20 years.

A number of players caught the eye this season.

Here’s a look at our top 25.

Tamer Abdallah, Northern Saints

The Saints’ coach enjoyed a stellar season despite balancing the efforts of leading the side and continuing to play good footy. Was named in team of the year on a halfback flank.

Spencer Aitken, Coburg Districts

Despite being limited to just 11 games, Aitken’s form was strong enough to earn him team of the year selection in 2022. Kicked 13 goals for the season.

Robbie Castello, Keilor Park

It was a fairytale return to the Devils for Castello. He finished the season with a premiership and was a strong performer just about every week. His team-high 36 goals saw him earn team of the year selection.

Damien Cavka, Keilor Park

Far too good for this level. The former West Coast Eagle showed his class when he needed including three straight goals in the grand final. Will play an important role in the club aiming to stay in Division 1 next season.

Blair Cronin, Oak Park

Finished second in the league goalkicking with 46 majors. Was unfortunate to miss his team’s finals series. Had a season-high of 11 in the final game of the home-and-away season against Jacana.

Anthony De Lorenzi, Oak Park

In his first full season of senior footy, De Lorenzi showed why he is set to be a star of the future. Finished with 21 goals and is a name to keep an eye on going forward.

Nikolas Dimeski, Coburg Districts

Named in the back pocket in the team of the year. Dimeski enjoyed a consistent season as the Lions reached a preliminary final.

Anthony Fawcus, Burnside Heights

Fawcus was named on the bench in the team of the year after a strong season where he kicked 13 goals and was named in the best six times.

Sebastian Gatherer, Burnside Heights

Despite being a smaller player, Gatherer’s attack on the footy ranks up there with the best in Division 2.

Steve Golding, Hadfield

One of the most prolific midfielders in the competition throughout the season. Golding was named in the best in all but one game for the Hawks.

Cameron Harris, Keilor Park

An experienced head who made the move from Avondale Heights at the start of the season. Helped the Devils to become the best defence in the league and earned team of the year selection.

Jordan Hughes, Burnside Heights

Named in the centre in the team of the year after a fantastic season. Hughes was one of the best goalkicking midfielders in the competition with 33 majors from 17 games.

Tomi Ibarra, Taylors Lakes

Enjoyed a strong season for the Lions with seven mentions in the best and 17 goals.

Daylan Kempster, Keilor Park

The Devils co-captain was brilliant this year in just about every aspect of the game. His year included a premiership, a best on ground medal in the grand final and team of the year selection. While he had 22 goals to his name, he also created plenty of opportunities for his teammates.

Cooper Keogh, Coburg Districts

The number one big man in Division 2. When Keogh was at his best, Districts usually weren’t too far off their own. Named in the best 13 times this season.

Ricky McGill, Coburg Districts

The former Roxburgh Park man was one of the unsung heroes of the Lions’ run to the preliminary finals this year.

Liam Molloy, Oak Park

Named on the halfback flank in the team of the year, Molloy showed a fantastic ability to break team’s open with his skills.

Sam Pontin, Keilor Park

One of the rising stars of the Devils’ line-up. A former Airport West junior, Pontin enjoyed a fine first season of senior footy and emerged as a reliable, consistent contributor for his side.

Benjamin Pretty, Hadfield

Named at fullback in the team of the year. Enjoyed a standout year against the division’s best forwards and more than often then not would come out on top.

Mark Sabatino, Hadfield

Finished as the league’s leading goalkicker with 53 goals which saw him earn a place in the team of the year.

Theo Sapountzis, Burnside Heights

Finished as the Bears’ leading goalkickers with 38 majors in 16 games. Played a strong role in helping his side cover the loss of Josh Covelli who moved to Hillside.

Vincent Schiavello, Keilor Park

One of the elite key defenders in the competition but also an unsung hero to those outside of Keilor Park. Enjoyed a brilliant season and often played a key role in stopping the opposition’s best forwards.

Ryan Smith, Oak Park

Named on the wing in the team of the year after a strong second season with the Kangaroos. Kicked 14 goals to ensure he had an impact forward of centre.

Jedd Taylor, Oak Park

One of the best players in the competition. Finished the year with 31 goals and 10 mentions in the best. Was named on the half-forward flank in the team of the year.

Bailey Wileman, Coburg Districts

His back half of the season was magnificent. Wileman was able to impact games in various ways including getting forward to kick a goal.
